N-valproyl-l-tryptophan (VPA-Tryp), new antiepileptic drug, was tested on CA1 hippocampal epileptiform bursting activity obtained by increasing potassium and lowering calcium and magnesium concentrations in the fluid perfusing rat brain slices. Each slice was treated with a single concentration (0.2, 0.5, 1 or 2 mM) of Valproate (VPA) or VPA-Tryp. Both burst duration and interburst frequency during and after treatment were off-line compared with baseline values. For both parameters, the latency and the length of statistically significant response periods as well as the magnitude of drug-induced responses were calculated. Synthetic musks are present in fine fragrances, cosmetics, soaps and laundry detergents. One of the most important synthetic musks is 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthaline+ ++ (AHTN; annual production: about 1500 metric tons). An increasing number of studies show that AHTN accumulates in surface water and fish and can be detected in human adipose tissue, as well in human milk. Chitosan can favorably modulate plasma lipids, but the available data are not conclusive. We evaluated the effect of chitosan on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in 28 patients with plasma triglyceride levels >150 mg/dL (mean age: 63 ± 12 years), not taking other lipid-lowering agents. All patients received a chitosan derived from fungal mycelium (Xantonet, Bromatech, Italy) at a fixed dose of 125 mg/d in addition to their current medications for 4 months. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to measure low-density lipoprotein (LDL) subclasses. Abstract We have isolated and characterized the green pigment accumulating in coelomic cells (eleocytes) of the common clam worm Nereis virens by means of RP-HPLC and ESI-tandem mass spectrometry. This pigment is a novel biliverdin-glutathione conjugate in which the glutathione is linked to the biliverdin-backbone via a thioether bond. The yolk precursor vitellogenin, a female-specific high-density lipoprotein ( ρ = 1179 kg/m 3 ) with a native molecular mass of ∼500 kDa and a subunit mass of ∼150 kDa, is capable of transporting this pigment as well as heme.
