Climate change in the Arctic is outpacing the global average and land-use is intensifying due to exploitation of previously inaccessible or unprofitable natural resources. A comprehensive understanding of how the joint effects of changing climate and productivity modify lake food web structure, biomass, trophic pyramid shape and abundance of physiologically essential biomolecules (omega-3 fatty acids) in the biotic community is lacking. Elevated concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) promote browning of lakes, which alters the physicochemical properties of water and ecosystem functioning. However, browning‐induced changes in basal production of polyunsaturated fatty acids from the n‐3 and n‐6 families (n‐3 and n‐6 PUFA) in lakes are not fully understood. Dark matters : contrasting responses of stream biofilm to browning and loss of riparian shading

Concentrations of terrestrial-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in freshwater ecosystems have increased consistently, causing freshwater browning. The mechanisms behind browning are complex, but in forestry-intensive regions browning is accelerated by land drainage. Forestry actions in streamside riparian forests alter canopy shading, which together with browning is expected to exert a complex and largely unpredictable control over key ecosystem functions. Light availability is the main regulator of primary production, shaping photosynthetic communities and their production of ecologically important biomolecules. Low-weight carboxylic acids as potential risk factor of compost phytotoxicity

Being intermediates of organic matter degradation, low-weight carboxylic acids (LWCA) can occur at phytotoxic concentrations on bioactive soils or in the processed organic material applied to soil. While toxicity potentials and mixture effects of LWCA are still poorly known, the potential phytotoxicity of the biomaterials is difficult to assess. In the study effective concentrations (EC) of formic, acetic and propionic acids at non adjusted pH were obtained in short-term germination assays (48 h for cress, Lepidium sativum, and 120 h for ryegrass Lolium multiflorum) and subchronic growth assays (21d). Signs of impaired thiamine (vitamin B1) status in feeding-migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were studied in three Baltic Sea areas, which differ in the proportion and nutritional composition of prey fish sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and herring (Clupea harengus). Sterols, essential lipids of most eukaryotic cells, ensure important structural and signaling functions. The selection pressure which has led to different dominant sterols in the three eukaryotic kingdoms remains unknown. Here we investigated the influence of the progression in the different steps of the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway (EBP) on the yeast resistance to transitions from aqueous to aerial media, typical perturbations of the higher fungi habitats. Anti-phospholipase A2 and anti-inflammatory activity of Santolina chamaecyparissus

The activity of the Santolina chamaecyparissus methanol extract was tested against the phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-induced mouse paw edema and in vitro inhibition of PLA2 activity. After fractionation, only the dichloromethane extract was active against the PLA2 in vitro test. In addition, it reduced the edema induced by arachidonic acid, and by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate in a multidose test. After chromatography on silicagel and gel filtration on Sephadex, and using an in vitro anti-PLA2 assay-guided process, we have isolated and identified from the dichloromethane extract the flavone nepetin and four sesquiterpenes.
