Syphilis is an important public health problem and an increasing incidence has been noted in recent years. Characterization of strain diversity through molecular data plays a critical role in the epidemiological understanding of this re-emergence. We here propose a new high-resolution multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum (TPA). We analyzed 30 complete and draft TPA genomes obtained directly from clinical samples or from rabbit propagated strains to identify suitable typing loci and tested the new scheme on 120 clinical samples collected in Switzerland and France. Aggregation of activated platelets is considerably mediated by the autocrine action of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) which is formed in a prostaglandin endoperoxide H2 synthase-1 (PGHS-1 or COX-1)-dependent manner. The activity of PGHS-1 can be stimulated by peroxides, an effect termed "peroxide tone", that renders PGHS-1 the key regulatory enzyme in the formation of TxA2. Activated platelets release nitric oxide (*NO) and superoxide (O*2) but their interactions with the prostanoid pathway have been controversially discussed in platelet physiology and pathophysiology. cis-9,10-Epoxystearic acid was used as a tool to probe the active sites of epoxide hydrolases (EHs) of mammalian and plant origin. We have compared the stereochemical features of the hydrolysis of this substrate catalysed by soluble and membrane-bound rat liver EHs, by soluble EH (purified to apparent homogeneity) obtained from maize seedlings or celeriac roots, and by recombinant soybean EH expressed in yeast. Plant EHs were found to differ in their enantioselectivity, i.e. their ability to discriminate between the two enantiomers of 9,10-epoxystearic acid. Colorimetric quantitation of trace amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate in the presence of nucleic acids and proteins

A fast and sensitive procedure for the colorimetric detection of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) is presented. The assay is based upon the formation of a chloroform-extractable ion pair between lauryl sulfate and methylene blue that is quantified spectrophotometrically with an estimated detection limit of 150 ng of SDS. The method is suitable for the monitoring of contaminating traces of SDS in protein or nucleic acid samples that have the potential to interfere with enzymatic manipulations such as proteolytic digest, restriction analysis, or reverse transcription. Abstract Complex-formation abilities of a series of N-methyl alkylaminomethane-1,1-diphosphonic acids (1–7) with a common tertiary nitrogen atom (CH3−N−R) bearing linear or branched alkyl, cycloheptyl or phenylalkyl R substituents towards zinc(II), magnesium(II) and calcium(II) in aqueous solution have been studied by means of pH-potentiometry, ESI-MS spectrometry, 1H NMR and 31P NMR methods. AbstractTwenty-two n-butyltin(IV) and t-butyltin(IV) complexes of ligands containing an –OH (–C@O) group or –OH and –COOHgroups and an aromatic {N} donor atom were prepared by metathetical reactions. On the basis of the FT-IR and Mo¨ssbauer spec-troscopic data, molecular structures were assigned to these compounds. The binding sites of the ligands were identified by means ofFT-IR spectroscopic measurements, and it was found that in most cases the organotin(IV) moiety reacts with the phenolic form ofthese ligands. Abstract Eutrophication (as an increase in total phosphorus [TP]) increases harmful algal blooms and reduces the proportion of high-quality phytoplankton in seston and the content of ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) in fish. Abstract Halocyclocarbamation of benzyl N -(1-phenyl-3-butenyl)carbamates afforded 6-functionalized 4-aryl-1,3-oxazinan-2-ones with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivity depending on the N -substituent. Importantly, in contrast to reported cyclocarbamations of homoallylic carbamates, which are generally trans -diastereoselective, cyclization of N -unsubstituted Cbz-protected homoallylamines led to cis -1,3-oxazinan-2-ones, predominantly. The use of N -benzylated and in situ prepared N -silylated derivatives resulted however in trans -selectivity.
