HIDRAdisk: validation of an innovative visual tool to assess the burden of hidradenitis suppurativa

2019

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful inflamed nodules, recurrent abscesses and fistulas located in apocrine gland–bearing body sites. The negative impact of HS on patient's quality of life (QoL) has been reported to be greater than other dermatologic conditions as psoriasis and atopic eczema, and its improvement is an important goal in disease management. Nowadays, there are no specific validated QoL instruments available for HS and generic dermatologic questionnaires are used. Objective: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the validity, reliability and responsiveness of HIDRAdisk, a new innovative t…

Colonization of adrenal glands and ovaries of mice by HSV-2 variants

1990

HSV-2 strain ER was shown to consist of variants with different pathogenic phenotype: Variant ER+ replicates to high titers in the adrenal glands and the ovaries but much less in the spleen; the testes were not colonized. ER+ migrates to the spinal ganglia and is highly neuroinvasive after i.p. inoculation. Variant ER- replicates 100-1,000 fold less in the adrenal glands and the ovaries, but proceeds to the spinal ganglia without invading the CNS. However, both variants are highly neuropathogenic after direct i.c. injection. We conclude that neuropathogenicity, neuroinvasiveness and the ability to replicate in the adrenal glands as well as ovaries are each determined by different sets of ge…

Low dose of isotretinoin: A comprehensive review

2020

Isotretinoin is a first-generation retinoid initially approved for the treatment of severe cases of acne vulgaris (nodulocystic acne). Because of its broad anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, it has been used beyond its initial approval in a myriad of other indications. Adverse effects of isotretinoin vary from xerosis to teratogenicity. Herein, we reviewed the literature, through date-unlimited PubMed search, from inception till December 2019, using the following search terms: "low-dose isotretinoin" and "dermatology," "isotretinoin and safety," "isotretinoin, off-label uses," "isotretinoin and male fertility," "isotretinoin, iPLEDGE system," aiming to deliver a therapeutic …

Chloracne following Environmental Contamination by TCDD in Seveso, Italy

1981

Data are presented on the occurrence of chloracne, clinical symptoms and biochemical changes in 164 children following environmental contamination by TCDD from an industrial accident in Seveso, Italy. An overall positive association was found between the territorial distribution of chloracne cases and the different levels of soil contamination in the affected area. Individual risk factors such as condition and length of exposure, intake via contaminated foods, etc. were evaluated; no single factor appeared to be associated with chloracne. Disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract were more frequently observed in children affected with chloracne in those from the same areas having no skin l…

Incidence and Clinical Implications of Autoimmune Thyroiditis in the Development of Acne in Young Patients

2021

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is on the rise among the population, and is frequently associated with patients with acne vulgaris, especially females aged between 18–55 years old. The connection between the two is not fully elucidated. In this study, 236 patients diagnosed with acne in the dermatological office of the private Pelican Hospital and in few private dermatological offices from Oradea, Romania, during January 2018–December 2020, aged between 12 and 55 years old, were endocrinologically investigated to determine AIT and its influence on the severity of the acne. The values for the thyroid antibodies and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined for all of the subjects. The f…

Polycystic ovary syndrome

2016

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 5-20% of women of reproductive age worldwide. The condition is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction and polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM) - with excessive androgen production by the ovaries being a key feature of PCOS. Metabolic dysfunction characterized by insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinaemia is evident in the vast majority of affected individuals. PCOS increases the risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes and other pregnancy-related complications, venous thromboembolism, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events and endometrial cancer. PCOS is a diagnosis of exclusion, based primarily on the p…

Azithromycin: Eine anti-inflammatorische Wirksamkeit im Einsatz bei der chronischen rekurrierenden multifokalen Osteomyelitis? Eine vorläufige Mittei…

2000

In this preliminary communication we report our experience with Azithromycin in patients with Chronic Recurring Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO). Seven out of 13 patients, mainly teenager, showed a fast clinical improvement after they were started on Azithromycin. The immediate therapeutic effect of Azithromycin in patients with CRMO was surprising and lead us to the hypothesis that Azithromycin could have an antiphlogistic in addition to it's antibiotic effect in this disease setting. In patients with reactive chronic pelvic osteomyelitis Azithromycin obviously had a direct influence on the sympathic coxitis. Half of the patients reported an immediate reduction of pain and a significant imp…

Association between Satisfaction with Life and Personality Types A and D in Young Women with Acne Vulgaris

2020

People with acne vulgaris report a lower level of satisfaction with life and are more frequently classified as having Type D personalities than those without acne. This research examined, for the first time, the moderating and mediating role of personality type in the relationship between acne severity and satisfaction with life. Among 300 female nursing and cosmetology students ranging in age from 19 to 24 years (M = 21.28, SD= 1.39), 150 individuals (50%) presented with symptoms of acne vulgaris (AV group), while the other 150 (50%) were categorized as controls without acne vulgaris (WAV sample). A cross-sectional study was conducted using three self-report questionnaires: The Satisfactio…
