Splitting of Surface-Immobilized Multicompartment Micelles into Clusters upon Charge Inversion

2016

International audience; We investigate a morphological transition of surface-immobilized triblock terpolymer micelles: the splitting into well-defined clusters of satellite micelles upon pH changes. The multicompartment micelles are formed in aqueous solution of ABC triblock terpolymers consisting of a hydrophobic polybutadiene block, a weak polyanionic poly(methacrylic acid) block, and a weak polycationic poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) block. They are subsequently immobilized on silicon wafer surfaces by dip-coating. The splitting process is triggered by a pH change to strongly basic pH, which goes along with a charge reversal of the micelles. We find that the aggregation number…

Blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) with styrene copolymers

1994

Binary blends of poly(2,6–dimethyl–1,4–phenylene oxide) (PPE) with various styrene copolymers were investigated. Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. In blends of PPE with SAN, as well as with ABS, the inter-facial tension between the blend components is significantly reduced upon addition of polystyrene–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers…

Blends of polyamide 6 and linear low density polyethylene functionalized with methacrylic acid derivatives

1997

Abstract Morphological, calorimetric, rheological, dielectric and mechanical behaviour of blends made with polyamide 6 (PA6) and linear low density polyethylene (PE) are presented. The PE was functionalized grafting ester and alcohol groups in a Brabender mixer with methacrylic acid derivatives. These groups induce “compatibilization” effects in the blends with respect to blends made with the unfunctionalized polyethylene. The difference effects on the behaviour of the blends of the various functional groups are shown. In particular, the interactions at the interface change depending on the chemical nature of the grafted groups. Ethyl and isobuthyl-methacrylate essentially cause dipolar int…

On the Preparation and Characterization of Polyethylene/Polyamide Blends by Melt Processing in the Presence of an Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer and…

2006

Samples of HDPE and PA6 have been melt-processed in the presence of two new phosphazene compounds, CP-2EPOX and CP-20XA together with an ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer. The blends have been prepared in an industrial twin-screw extruder by using PA6 and PE in weight ratios of 25/75 and 75/25. When used, 5 phr of EAA and 0.2 phr of CP have been added. The materials have been completely characterized from a rheological, morphological, and mechanical point of view. The results indicate that the additives used caused an increase in the rupture tensile properties, of the impact strength and viscosity especially in the PE-rich blend in the presence of CP-2EPOX. This result can be attributed both …

Effect of interfacial area on heterogeneous free radical grafting of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide: Grafting of acrylic acid on poly…

2014

The role of the polymer interfacial area on free radical grafting of acrylic acid (AA) onto poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) was studied at 65°C using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a solvent and swelling agent, benzoylperoxide (BPO) as chemical initiator and PVDF nanoparticles as polymer matrix. Under adopted conditions PVDF particles do not melt neither dissolve in the reaction medium and FTIR analyses performed on carefully washed nanoparticles confirmed the achievement of high grafting levels. The mass fraction of grafted AA increased with the grafting time and the BPO concentration while it decreased when the density of the fluid phase was enhanced. Collected results suggest th…

Energy Consumption for the Desalination of Salt Water Using Polyelectrolyte Hydrogels as the Separation Agent

2017

The energy consumption for a novel desalination approach using charged hydrogels under externally applied pressure is experimentally measured and calculated. The salt separation is based on a partial rejection of mobile salt ions caused by the fixed charges inside the polyelectrolyte network. Self-synthesized and commercial poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels are used to study the desalination performance in reference to sodium chloride solutions within the concentration range of 0.1–35 g L−1. The influence of various synthetic parameters, such as the degree of crosslinking (DC) and the size and shape of the particles, is investigated. Furthermore, the effect of process parameters including the am…

Characterization of blends with polyamide 6 and ethylene acrylic acid copolymers at different acrylic acid content

2002

In this work the morphological, calorimetric, rheological and mechanical behaviour and fourier transmission infrared analysis of blends made with polyamide 6 (PA6) and ethylene acrylic acid copolymers (EAA) containing different amount of acrylic acid were investigated. The results observed from the sample characterizations evidenced as acrylic acid cause a compatibilizing effect between polyethylene and polyamide components with modifications of blends morphology and mechanical behaviour. These effects are enhanced with increase of the acrylic acid content in the copolymer and they were attributed generally to hydrogen bond interactions among the acrylic acid group and the functional groups…

PAA-PAMPS Copolymers as an Efficient Tool to Control CaCO3 Scale Formation

2013

Scale formation, the deposition of certain minerals such as CaCO3, MgCO3, and CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O in industrial facilities and household devices, leads to reduced efficiency or severe damage. Therefore, incrustation is a major problem in everyday life. In recent years, double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) have been the focus of interest in academia with regard to their antiscaling potential. In this work, we synthesized well-defined blocklike PAA-PAMPS copolymers consisting of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate (AMPS) units in a one-step reaction by RAFT polymerization. The derived copolymers had dispersities of 1.3 and below. The copolymers have then b…
