Itsetunnon perustaa rakennetaan päiväkoti-iässä. Päivi Koiviston tutkimus yhden päiväkodin toimintakulttuurista osoittaa, että lasten itsetunnon vahvistaminen päiväkodin arjessa on mahdollista, mutta se vaatii kasvattajilta ja koko työyhteisöltä tietoista toimintaa ja uskallusta oman työn kriittiseen arviointiin ja kehittämiseen.
