Defining Kawasaki disease and pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome-temporally associated to SARS-CoV-2 infection during SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in…
2021
Abstract Background There is mounting evidence on the existence of a Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome-temporally associated to SARS-CoV-2 infection (PIMS-TS), sharing similarities with Kawasaki Disease (KD). The main outcome of the study were to better characterize the clinical features and the treatment response of PIMS-TS and to explore its relationship with KD determining whether KD and PIMS are two distinct entities. Methods The Rheumatology Study Group of the Italian Pediatric Society launched a survey to enroll patients diagnosed with KD (Kawasaki Disease Group – KDG) or KD-like (Kawacovid Group - KCG) disease between February 1st 2020, and May 31st 2020. Demographic, clini…
Multicomponent Exercise Training Combined with Nutritional Counselling Improves Physical Function, Biochemical and Anthropometric Profiles in Obese C…
2020
Aerobics or strength exercise plus diet interventions have been shown to counteract childhood obesity. However, little is known with regard to periodized multicomponent exercise interventions combined with nutritional counselling, which might be less demanding but more enjoyable and respectful of children and adolescents&rsquo
Vegetable and Fruit Intakes Are Associated with hs-CRP Levels in Pre-Pubertal Girls
2017
The influence of diet on inflammation in children remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the influence of diet on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in a pre-pubertal population free of other influences that may affect hs-CRP levels. We determined hs-CRP levels in 571 six- to eight-year-old children using an hs-CRP ELISA kit. Information on food and nutrient intake was obtained through a food-frequency questionnaire. Overall dietary quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). We found that girls in the highest tertile of hs-CRP levels had a higher intake of saturated fatty acid, and lower intakes of fiber and vitamin E and a lower HEI score when compared to tho…
Effects of one year of training with elastic bands on the pain in menopausal women
2018
The therapeutic modulation of atherogenic dyslipidemia and inflammatory markers in the metabolic syndrome: what is the clinical relevance?
2008
The metabolic syndrome consists of a constellation of clinical and biochemical risk factors that cluster together and heighten the risk for atherogenesis, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Established risk cardiovascular factors like hypertension, atherogenic dyslipidaemia, and glucose intolerance occur in the setting of insulin resistance and central adiposity, with genetic and environmental influences modulating the ultimate risk. Chronic insults to the endothelium take its toll in the form of silent as well as clinically evident cardiovascular events. The cellular and vascular accompaniments have shed some light into the underlying pathophysiology. Heightened, low-grade inflammatory…

No effect of C-reactive protein on early atherosclerosis in LDLR-/- / human C-reactive protein transgenic mice
2008
summaryThe association between increased concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and future cardiovascular events is well established. However, it is currently unclear whether this clinical observation represents an epiphenomenon or whether the pentraxin may actively promote the development of atherosclerosis. Experimental studies with knockout mice with a defect in apolipoprotein E (ApoE-/-) have been used to investigate the role of CRP in atherogenesis, but the results obtained have been contradictory so far. Since knockout mice with a defect in low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR-/-) may represent a better model of atherogenesis compared to ApoE-/- animals, we undertook experiments…
TGF-beta1 in liver fibrosis: an inducible transgenic mouse model to study liver fibrogenesis.
1999
Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) is a powerful stimulus for collagen formation in vitro. To determine the in vivo effects of TGF-beta1 on liver fibrogenesis, we generated transgenic mice overexpressing a fusion gene [C-reactive protein (CRP)/TGF-beta1] consisting of the cDNA coding for an activated form of TGF-beta1 under the control of the regulatory elements of the inducible human CRP gene promoter. Two transgenic lines were generated with liver-specific overexpression of mature TGF-beta1. After induction of the acute phase response (15 h) with lipopolysaccharide (100 microgram ip), plasma TGF-beta1 levels reached600 ng/ml in transgenic animals, which is100 times above normal …
Spontaneous hepatic fibrosis in transgenic mice overexpressing PDGF-A.
2008
Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) plays a central role in repair mechanisms after acute and chronic tissue damage. To further evaluate the role of PDGF-A in liver fibrogenesis in vivo, we generated transgenic mice with hepatocyte-specific overexpression of PDGF-A using the CRP-gene promoter. Transgenic but not wildtype mice showed expression of PDGF-A mRNA in the liver. Hepatic PDGF-A overexpression was accompanied by a significant increase in hepatic procollagen III mRNA expression as well as TGF-beta1 expression. Liver histology showed increased deposition of extracellular matrix in transgenic but not in wildtype mice. PDGF-A-transgenic mice showed positive sinusoidal staining for alp…
Inflammation and frailty in the elderly: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2016
The pathogenesis of frailty and the role of inflammation is poorly understood. We examined the evidence considering the relationship between inflammation and frailty through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A systematic literature search of papers providing data on inflammatory biomarkers and frailty was carried out in major electronic databases from inception until May 2016. From 1856 initial hits, 35 studies (32 cross-sectional studies n = 3232 frail, n = 11,483 pre-frail and n = 8522 robust, and 563 pre-frail + robust; 3 longitudinal studies n = 3402 participants without frailty at baseline) were meta-analyzed. Cross-sectional studies reported that compared to 6757 robust participa…
