Characterization of the effect of intracorneal ring segment in corneal ectasia after laser refractive surgery
2018
Purpose: To evaluate the visual, refractive, topographic, pachymetric, and biomechanical outcomes after intracorneal ring segment implantation in corneas with post-LASIK ectasia. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study enrolling 26 eyes of 22 patients with post-LASIK ectasia and undergoing intracorneal ring segment implantation (KeraRing®, Mediphacos) using a 60-kHz femtosecond laser (IntraLase®, IntraLase Corp.) for corneal tunnelization. Visual, refractive, anterior, and posterior corneal topographic (Pentacam HR, Oculus), pachymetric, and corneal biomechanical changes (Ocular response Analyzer, Reichert) were evaluated during a 12-month follow-up. Vector analysis of astigmatic changes …
Endothelial study of iris-claw phakic lens: four year follow-up.
1998
Abstract Purpose: To study quantitative and morphometric endothelial changes in phakic eyes implanted with the Worst iris-claw lens to correct high myopia. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital “La Fe”, Valencia, Spain. Material and Methods: This retrospective study involved 111 phakic eyes (73 patients) implanted with the Worst iris-claw lens. Noncontact specular microscopy and computer-assisted analysis was performed preoperatively and 6 months and 1, 2, 3, and 4 years postoperatively. Results: The mean cell loss was 3.85% at 6 months, 6.59% at 1 year, 9.22% at 2 years, 11.68% at 3 years, and 13.42% at 4 years. At 2 years, the hexagonality and coefficient variation in …
Refractive lens exchange with the Acri. Twin asymmetric diffractive bifocal intraocular lens system
2009
PURPOSE To evaluate efficacy, safety, and predictability after refractive lens exchange (RLE) in patients who had implantation of asymmetric Acri.Twin bifocal diffractive intraocular lenses. METHODS The study comprised 130 eyes of 65 consecutive patients after RLE who had bilateral implantation of the Acri.Twin system. Eyes were divided into myopic and hyperopic groups. Binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), uncorrected distance near visual acuity, and best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA) were recorded preoperatively and 6 months after surgery. RESULTS Efficacy indexes were 0.99 for myopic and 0.93 for hyperopic patients at …
Low testosterone levels are related to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and altered subclinical atherosclerotic markers in type 2 diabetic…
2017
Abstract Introduction Low testosterone levels in men are associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk. However, the role of testosterone in mitochondrial function and leukocyte-endothelium interactions is unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between testosterone levels, metabolic parameters, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, inflammation and leukocyte-endothelium interactions in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and methods The study was performed in 280 male type 2 diabetic patients and 50 control subjects. Anthropometric and metabolic parameters, testosterone levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, mitochondrial membrane potential, TNFα, adhesio…
Thirty-one novel biomarkers as predictors for clinically incident diabetes.
2010
Background The prevalence of diabetes is increasing in all industrialized countries and its prevention has become a public health priority. However, the predictors of diabetes risk are insufficiently understood. We evaluated, whether 31 novel biomarkers could help to predict the risk of incident diabetes. Methods and Findings The biomarkers were evaluated primarily in the FINRISK97 cohort (n = 7,827; 417 cases of clinically incident diabetes during the follow-up). The findings were replicated in the Health 2000 cohort (n = 4,977; 179 cases of clinically incident diabetes during the follow-up). We used Cox proportional hazards models to calculate the relative risk of diabetes, after adjustin…
Circulating mononuclear cells nuclear factor-kappa B activity, plasma xanthine oxidase, and low grade inflammatory markers in adult patients with fam…
2009
Eur J Clin Invest 2010; 40 (2): 89–94 Abstract Background Few data are available on circulating mononuclear cells nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) activity and plasma xanthine oxidase (XO) activity in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). The goal of the study was to analyse circulating mononuclear cells NF-kB and plasma XO activities in FH patients. Materials and methods Thirty FH index patients and 30 normoglycaemic normocholesterolaemic controls matched by age, gender, body mass index, abdominal circumference and homeostasis model assessment index were studied. Plasma XO and inflammatory markers were measured by standard methods. NF-kB was assayed in circulating mononuclear c…
Synovial fluid-derivedYersinia-reactive T cells responding to human 65-kDa heat-shock protein and heat-stressed antigen-presenting cells
1991
Humoral and cellular immune reactions to heat-shock proteins have been implicated in the pathogenesis of arthritis. Heat-shock proteins occur in bacteria as well as all eukaryotes and have been highly conserved during evolution. Cross-reactivity between bacterial and human heat-shock proteins induced at the site of inflammation may underlie the pathogenesis of some forms of arthritis. In order to test this hypothesis, we raised and cloned a Yersinia-specific T cell line from the synovial fluid lymphocytes of a patient with Yersinia-induced reactive arthritis. From this line we obtained a CD4+ T cell clone that proliferated in response to Yersinia antigens and both to the mycobacterial and t…
Analysis of the correlations between oxidative stress, gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors in the human subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syn…
2015
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is commonly associated with endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disorders. On the basis of this observation, our aim was to examine the oxidative status and the matrix metalloproteases (MMP) profile in a group of subjects with OSAS. We enrolled 48 subjects with OSAS defined after a 1-night cardiorespiratory sleep study, who were subsequently subdivided in two subgroups according to the severity of OSAS (low grade = L-OSAS; high grade= H-OSAS). We measured the parameters of oxidative stress, such as lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, total antioxidant status (TAS), nitric oxide metabolites (NOx), and the plasma concentration…
Accuracy of Self-Esteem Judgments at Zero Acquaintance.
2017
Objective Perceptions of strangers’ self-esteem can have wide-ranging interpersonal consequences. Aiming to reconcile inconsistent results from previous research that had predominantly suggested that self-esteem is a trait that can hardly be accurately judged at zero acquaintance, we examined unaquainted others’ accuracy in inferring individuals’ actual self-esteem. Method Ninety-nine target participants (77 female; Mage = 23.5 years) were videotaped in a self-introductory situation, and self-esteem self-reports and reports by well-known informants were obtained as separate accuracy criteria. Forty unacquainted observers judged targets' self-esteem on the basis of these short video sequence…
Proactive interference of a sequence of tones in a two-tone pitch comparison task
2000
Subjects compared pitches of a standard tone and a comparison tone separated by 1,300-3,000 msec and responded according to whether the comparison tone sounded higher or lower in pitch than the standard tone. Three interfering tones at 300-msec intervals were presented before each pair of tones. Their pitch range varied, being either below or above the pitch of the standard tone; in some of the trials, their pitches were identical to the pitch of the standard tone (no interference). The highest error rate in performance was found when the interfering tones and the comparison tone deviated in the same direction in pitch from the standard tone. In turn, their deviations in the opposite direct…
