Shifts in diversity and microscale distribution of the adapted bacterial phenotypes due to Hg(II) spiking in soil.

2003

In a previous experiment [Ranjard et al. (2000) FEMS Microbiol Ecol 31:107–115], the spatial heterogeneity of a mercury impact on soil bacterial community was revealed by an increase of mercury-resistant (HgR) bacterial numbers in the outer fraction and the sand fractions when compared to those in the silt fractions. The objectives of the present study were (i) to investigate whether mercury exposure affects the diversity and the distribution within the various fractions of the HgR populations and (ii) to evaluate the contribution of the HgR populations to the overall community adaptation. A total of 236 strains isolated before (104 isolates) and 30 days (132 isolates) after spiking were ch…

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi influence host infection during epidemics in a wild plant pathosystem

2022

SummaryWhile pathogenic and mutualistic microbes are ubiquitous across ecosystems and often co-occur within hosts, how they interact to determine patterns of disease in genetically diverse wild populations is unknown. To test whether microbial mutualists provide protection against pathogens, and whether this varies among host genotypes, we conducted a field experiment in three naturally-occurring epidemics of a fungal pathogen, Podosphaera plantaginis, infecting a host plant, Plantago lanceolata, in the Åland Islands, Finland. In each population, we collected epidemiological data on experimental plants from six allopatric populations that had been inoculated with a mixture of mutualistic arb…

Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations.

2013

International audience; Gaveau J, Berret B, Demougeot L, Fadiga L, Pozzo T, Papaxanthis C. Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations. J Neurophysiol 111: 4-16, 2014. First published October 16, 2013; doi: 10.1152/jn.01029.2012.-We permanently deal with gravity force. Experimental evidences revealed that moving against gravity strongly differs from moving along the gravity vector. This directional asymmetry has been attributed to an optimal planning process that optimizes gravity force effects to minimize energy. Yet, only few studies have considered the case of vertical movements in the context of optimal control. What kin…

Modeling crowd dynamics through coarse-grained data analysis

2018

International audience; Understanding and predicting the collective behaviour of crowds is essential to improve the efficiency of pedestrian flows in urban areas and minimize the risks of accidents at mass events. We advocate for the development of crowd traffic management systems, whereby observations of crowds can be coupled to fast and reliable models to produce rapid predictions of the crowd movement and eventually help crowd managers choose between tailored optimization strategies. Here, we propose a Bi-directional Macroscopic (BM) model as the core of such a system. Its key input is the fundamental diagram for bi-directional flows, i.e. the relation between the pedestrian fluxes and d…

Romanian adoptive families: Stressors, coping strategies and resources

2012

Abstract This study was undertaken to describe the stressors that the Romanian adoptive families confront with, during the different stages of their life cycle, the coping strategies that they adopt and the resources needed and available to them to respond to these stressors. It was used a purposive sample, composed of nine mothers that have adopted children between five months and five years old. The technique used for the data collection was the narrative interview. The main emergent themes in the interviews have been: the desire to have a child and the infertility; the adoption procedure; the uncertainty regarding the moment of placement; the instant adoption of the parental role-status;…

Fire simulation-based adaptation of SmartRescue App for serious game: Design, setup and user experience

2015

Managing the crisis by embracing game and simulation elements and human participation into an interactive system is a mean to learn about responding to unexpected events. This so-called serious game approach is adopted in a summer school for crisis management attended by doctoral students and practitioners, as a part of its learning curriculum. The participants took part in the Disaster in my Backyard serious game, designed as a realistic crisis environment. A smartphone app encompassing fire simulations of a five-story apartment, showing how the flame, smoke and temperature of the fire developed over time from floor to floor, was tested in this serious game scenario. The color-coding of sm…

Formed Emigration: A Qualitative Study About Spanish Graduated Experiences And Adaptation Abroad

2019

In the past few years, Spain has gone through an economic recession that has impeded the development of professional opportunities for young graduates. Consequently, there is an increasing migration of young graduates across borders to work abroad. The aim of this qualitative research carried out through a case study, is to examine the experiences of Spanish graduates in developing a professional career abroad, specifically in Germany. Ten interviews were analyzed through inductive content analysis. Our results indicate that the migration of young Spaniards to work abroad is the result of economic and/or professional need rather than choice. Furthermore, language proficiency was found to be…

Self-concept and adaptation to illness in pediatric diabetic patients

2014
