Management of Childhood Obesity—Time to Shift from Generalized to Personalized Intervention Strategies

2021

As a major public health concern, childhood obesity is a multifaceted and multilevel metabolic disorder influenced by genetic and behavioral aspects. While genetic risk factors contribute to and interact with the onset and development of excess body weight, available evidence indicates that several modifiable obesogenic behaviors play a crucial role in the etiology of childhood obesity. Although a variety of systematic reviews and meta-analyses have reported the effectiveness of several interventions in community-based, school-based, and home-based programs regarding childhood obesity, the prevalence of children with excess body weight remains high. Additionally, researchers and pediatric c…

2016

Objectives: The aim of this Health Promoting Sport Club (HPSC) study was to compare physical activity (PA), sleep time and screen time (ST) between sports club participants (n = 1200) and non-participants (n = 913). Design: A cross-sectional survey design was employed to assess PA, sleep and ST of adolescents. Methods: Information on these was collected from 14 to 16 year old adolescents (1200 sport club participants and 913 non-participants) through a standardized questionnaire. Results: Boys were more physically active than girls and met the PA guidelines more often than girls (p < 0.001). The proportion of youth reaching the PA guidelines was significantly higher among youth participants…

Trends in excellent self-rated health among adolescents: A comparative Nordic study

2019

Abstract Background: Excellent self-rated health (SRH) can be seen as an important component of positive health among adolescents. The aim of this paper is to examine time trends of excellent health among adolescents in five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) between 2002 and 2014, including differences between countries, gender and age. Methods: Nordic data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey (including 11-, 13- and 15-year-olds) from 2002 (n = 19,009), 2006 (n = 29,656), 2010 (n = 33,232) and 2014 (n = 31,540) were analysed by design-adjusted binomial logistic regression models. Results: The trend analysis of excellent SRH for Nordi…

Item response theory and differential test functioning analysis of the HBSC-Symptom-Checklist across 46 countries

2022

Abstract Background The Symptom Checklist (SCL) developed by the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study is a non-clinical measure of psychosomatic complaints (e.g., headache and feeling low) that has been used in numerous studies. Several studies have investigated the psychometric characteristics of this scale; however, some psychometric properties remain unclear, among them especially a) dimensionality, b) adequacy of the Graded Response Model (GRM), and c) measurement invariance across countries. Methods Data from 229,906 adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 from 46 countries that participated in the 2018 HBSC survey were analyzed. Adolescents were selected using representative s…

Cross‐national validation of the Social Media Disorder‐scale : Findings from adolescents from 44 countries

2022

Background and aims There is currently no cross-national validation of a scale that measures problematic social media use (SMU). The present study investigated and compared the psychometric properties of the Social Media Disorder (SMD)-scale among young adolescents from different countries. Design Validation study. Setting and participants Data came from 222,532 adolescents from 44 countries participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey (2017/2018). The HBSC survey was conducted in the European region and Canada. Participants were on average 13.5 years old (SD = 1.6) and 51.2% were girls. Measurement Problematic SMU was measured using the 9-item SMD-scale with …

Adolescent use of social media and associations with sleep patterns across 18 European and North American countries

2023

Objective Over the past decade, concurrent with increasing social media use (SMU), there has been a shift toward poorer sleep among adolescents in many countries. The purpose of this study was to examine the cross-national associations between adolescent SMU and sleep patterns, by comparing 4 different categories of SMU (nonactive, active, intense, and problematic use). Design, setting, and participants Data were from 86,542 adolescents in 18 European and North American countries that participated in the 2017/18 Health Behaviour in School-aged study. Measurements Mixed-effects linear regression models were used to examine cross-national associations between 4 SMU categories and adolescent s…

Physical activity of adolescents with long term illnesses or disabilities in reference to ICF personal factors

2016

Participation and activities are important for adolescents’ functioning and health. This is in line with the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Main areas of functioning include physical activities (PA) and participation in organised sport clubs. To ensure adolescents with long term illnesses or disabilities (LTID) can participate fully in society, functional abilities interact with contextual environmental and personal factors. Because habits and attitudes of adolescents can carry through to adulthood, it is important to assess the personal factors in relation to activities and participation. Therefore, the aims of this stu…

The Correlation between Adolescent Daily Breakfast Consumption and Socio-Demographic:Trends in 23 European Countries Participating in the Health Beha…

2023

Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day and can benefit adolescent health in several ways. The aims of the present study were (1) to identify adolescents’ socio-demographic (sex, family affluence and family structure) determinants of daily breakfast consumption (DBC) and (2) to describe trends in DBC among adolescents across 23 countries. Cross-sectional surveys of nationally representative samples of adolescents (aged 11, 13, and 15 years) (n = 589,737) participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey from 2002 to 2018 were used. Multilevel logistic regression analyses modeled DBC over time, adjusted for family affluence, family structure…
