Design and Implementation of an Ultra-Low Power Wake-up Radio for Wireless IoT Devices
2018
In this paper, we present the design and prototype implementation of an ultra-low power wake-up radio for wireless IoT devices. The prototyped wake-up radio consumes only 580nA from 3V power supply, covers distance range of up to 55 meters and achieves a sensitivity of -49.5dBm. This wakeup radio module can easily be integrated into wireless IoT devices and thereby reducing the overall power consumption of the battery powered and energy harvesting based devices. The prolonged life time of the devices can reduce the overall costs when deployed in large scale.
The scenario of electric vehicles in Norway
2017
Abstract Electrical vehicle (EV) technology is widely recognized as one of most important transport measurements, as it does not emit greenhouse gases and noise while reducing the crude oil dependency. EV prices, driving range, and battery types are the main decisive challenges in EV industry. Currently, Norway is the leading country in EV by introducing economical and efficient incentives that have a direct impact on increasing the EV buying rate. The economic incentives such as exemption from vehicle taxes have reduced the EV prices. Moreover, flexible charging infrastructure has increased the battery range by establishing fast and slow charging places around the country. The EV usage is …
A measurement setup for electric bicycles powered from renewable energy sources
2014
In this paper a measurement system for a pedalassist rickshaw is described. It has been designed and realized with the purpose of a deep analysis of operating time, range and general performance of the prototype vehicle. The three-wheel velocipede under test, developed in the SDES laboratory of the University of Palermo, is equipped with two battery packs, and a photovoltaic panel which is used to recharge one of the packs at a time. To further improve the autonomy of this mean, a fuel cell will be added as a power source, whose consequent improvement in performance could be easily investigated by the presented measurement setup. An Arduino board has been employed to receive and store all c…
A steady state and dynamic fuel cell model including temperature effects
2009
In the last few years fuel cells have attracted much interest from both academic and industrial researchers to replace current lithium-ion and similar rechargeable battery systems. A wide variety of research areas benefit from fuel cell use: electro-chemical, stationary, transportation and portable electronics can be cited as an example. Potential applications range from few watts to megawatts systems. Even concerning quite different scientific areas, fuel cell modelling is a common requirement. The complexity of such a topic relies not only on the modelling approach but also in the model structure and implementation. In this paper a steady state and dynamic fuel cell circuital model includ…
Design and implementation of a long-range low-power wake-up radio for IoT devices
2019
In this paper, we present the design and implementation of an on-demand wake-up radio (WuR) for long-range wireless IoT devices to reduce the power consumption, thereby increasing the life time of the devices. A custom narrow-band (NB) low noise amplifier is designed and implemented for WuR. The low-noise amplifier achieves a gain of 31 dB at 1 mA current consumption from a 6 V power supply. The WuR achieves a sensivity of -80 dBm by consuming just 1 mA, thereby optimizing the energy consumption of battery powered long-range IoT devices, hence reducing the power consumption and overall costs when deployed in large scale.
Finding the best separation in situations of extremely low chromatographic resolution.
2010
Abstract Samples with a large number of compounds or similarities in their structure and polarity may yield insufficient chromatographic resolution. In such cases, however, finding conditions where the largest number of compounds appears sufficiently resolved can be still worthwhile. A strategy is here reported that optimises the resolution level of chromatograms in cases where conventional global criteria, such as the worst resolved peak pair or the product of elementary resolutions, are not able to detect any separation, even when most peaks are baseline resolved. The strategy applies a function based on the number of “well resolved” peaks, which are those that exceed a given threshold of…
Influence of oscillating main flow on separation efficiency in asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation.
2021
The steadily rising interest in the investigation of interactions between nanomaterials and biological media has also led to an increasing interest in asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF-FFF). The biggest strength of AF-FFF is the possibility to alter the flow profiles to suit a specific separation problem. In this paper, the influence of an oscillating main flow on the separation efficiency of AF-FFF is investigated. Such oscillations can e.g. be caused by the main pump To investigate the influence of such flow conditions on the separation efficiency in AF-FFF systematically, different oscillation profiles were applied and their influence on the elution profile and the retention…
Improving Separation of Oil and Water With a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump
2018
Summary A novel centrifugal pump that increases oil-droplet sizes in produced water has been developed. This paper investigates a concept of pumping-pressure optimization, with respect to downstream separation efficiency, for the new pump. The investigation shows that the coalescing centrifugal pump always increased the separation efficiency of a downstream hydrocyclone. Furthermore, it is shown that the pumping pressure can be adjusted to maximize the improvement. Experimental results demonstrate how pumping conditions that minimize the volume fraction of droplets with a diameter smaller than the cut size of the hydrocyclone maximize the separation efficiency. Finally, it is demonstrated h…
A VR-Enhanced Rollover Car Simulator and Edutainment Application for Increasing Seat Belt Use Awareness
2021
Most countries have active road safety policies that seek the objective of reducing deaths in traffic accidents. One of the main factors in this regard is the awareness of the safety measures, one of the most important being the correct usage of the seat belt, a device that is known to save thousands of lives every year. The presented work shows a VR-enhanced edutainment application designed to increase awareness on the use of seat belts. For this goal, a motorized rollover system was developed that, synchronized with a VR application (shown in a head-mounted display for each user inside a real car), rolls over this car with up to four passengers inside. This way, users feel the sensations …
