Viktor Sklovskij na Belomorkanale: literator kak razvedcik
2017
Viktor Shklovskii actively participated in the infamous collective volume about the White Sea-Baltic canal (1934). He did not, however, take part in the writers’ excursion organized by the OGPU: he had travelled to the lager alone well before that, looking for his convicted brother. This is, at least, the version the writer was trying to spread in his senior years, clearly trying to diminish his responsibility for a book glorifying slave labour in the Soviet camps in the eyes of the progressive intelligentsia. In the post-Stalin years, a new role-model for writers emerged, offering an alternative to the previous forced choice between “general” and “martyr”: we could call this third option t…
Segmental Organization of Cephalic Ganglia in Arthropods
2007
Cephalic ganglia in arthropods encompass neuromeres of the supraesophageal ganglion (i.e., the brain) and the subesophageal ganglion. Whereas neuromeres of the subesophageal ganglion are clearly distinguishable, the segmental pattern of the brain is derived and less well understood. In this article, we give an overview of the current state of a long-lasting debate on the segmental organization of the arthropod head and brain, discussing embryonic morphological and molecular data, with a main focus on insects. Embryonic expression data on key developmental genes such as engrailed, orthodenticle, and Hox genes will be summarized to compare the metameric organization of the head (sub- and supr…

Persistent and recurrent achalasia after Heller myotomy: analysis of different patterns and long-term results of reoperation.
2007
Hypothesis Two groups of patients with inadequate therapeutic success after surgical treatment for achalasia can be identified, patients with type 1 recurrence (early recurrence after technical failure of myotomy or a scarring process requiring remyotomy) and patients with type 2 recurrence (late recurrence with irreversible progression of the disease and development of megaesophagus requiring esophagectomy). Design Prospective study. Setting University-based tertiary care center. Patients One hundred sixty-three patients undergoing surgery for achalasia during 20.3 years. Interventions Conventional remyotomy for type 1 recurrence (group 1) and esophagectomy (transhiatal or transthoracic) f…
Zweizeitige Ösophagusresektion mit ischämischer Präkonditionierung des Schlauchmagens bei dekompensiertem Dolichomegaösophagus im Endstadium der Acha…

Development of a megaesophagus with a sigmoid-shaped distal part in patients with achalasia--even in the course of successful myotomy with reduction of the resting pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter--is often the expression of an irreversible progression of the disease. Management of patients with end-stage achalasia and aperistaltic, dilated "burned-out" esophagus--with or without peptic stenosis--is a therapeutic challenge for gastroenterologists and surgeons. We report on a 37-year-old female patient with decompensated dolichomegaesophagus following multiple endoscopic and operative interventions at the lower and upper esophageal sphincters presenting with severe dysphagia and we…

2008 AESOP PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Bridging the Gap, Building the Bridge: The Mediating Role of Planning Theory and Practice The AESOP-ACSP 2008 conference theme “Bridging the Divide: Celebrating the City” focuses on the mediating role of cities. Many cities are, to some degree, divided or contested: differences (in age, ethnicity, gender, class, religion and culture) are evident in cities at various scales and levels of intensity. From the perspective of a more equitable society, planning is about designing socio-spatial interventions to promote greater social equality. This is the ethical dimension of planning. Can we teach students how to think reflectively about designing socio…
