Latvian Writers’ Strategies of Resistance during De-Stalinisation: The Case of Gunārs Priede

2017

This paper traces developments in the Soviet Latvian literary scene between the late 1950s and early 1970s. The first part examines aspects of social organisation as demonstrated by the daily routines of so-called creative unions characteristic for the overall pattern of the way in which social mechanisms worked under Soviet rule, even if there were constant attempts to overcome the limits set to expression by the communist system. The second part provides a case study of the biography and creative work of Latvian playwright Gunārs Priede 1928–2000, a leading representative of the young generation of authors of that period. The paper not only points towards the parallels in social and aesth…

‘It’s not a part of me, but it is what it is’: the struggle of becoming en-wheeled after spinal cord injury

2019

Many people who experience spinal cord injury become long-term wheelchair users. This article addresses the process of becoming en-wheeled through the case example of a disabled man called Patrick. An intrinsic case study informed by posthumanist developments was used. Within this design, Patrick and his manual wheelchair were the entangled participants of the inquiry.Interviews and fieldwork observation with Patrick were conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using the posthumanist notion of 'assemblages'.The results illuminate Patrick's struggle of negotiating a new embodied selfhood that includes the wheelchair. Patrick engaged in ableist rehabilitation after spinal cord injury to recu…

Improve hip fracture outcome in the elderly patient (iHOPE) : A study protocol for a pragmatic, multicentre randomised controlled trial to test the e…

2018

IntroductionHip fracture surgery is associated with high in-hospital and 30-day mortality rates and serious adverse patient outcomes. Evidence from randomised controlled trials regarding effectiveness of spinal versus general anaesthesia on patient-centred outcomes after hip fracture surgery is sparse. Methods and analysisThe iHOPE study is a pragmatic national, multicentre, randomised controlled, open-label clinical trial with a two-arm parallel group design. In total, 1032 patients with hip fracture (>65 years) will be randomised in an intended 1:1 allocation ratio to receive spinal anaesthesia (n=516) or general anaesthesia (n=516). Outcome assessment will occur in a blinded manner aft…

Aesthetic judgments of music in experts and laypersons--an ERP study.

2010

We investigated whether music experts and laypersons differ with regard to aesthetic evaluation of musical sequences 16 music experts and 16 music laypersons judged the aesthetic value (beauty judgment task) as well as the harmonic correctness (correctness judgment task) of chord sequences The sequences consisted of five chords with the final chord sounding congruous, ambiguous or incongruous relative to the harmonic context established by the preceding four chords On behavioural measures, few differences were observed between experts and laypersons However, several differences in event-related potential (ERP) parameters were observed in auditory, cognitive and aesthetic processing of chord…

Factors related to the psychological impact of malocclusion in adolescents

2020

AbstractTo study the association between orthodontic treatment need and the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics in a sample of adolescents, as well as other associated factors. A transversal study was conducted on 1,158 adolescents (12–16 years old) examined at the schools selected for the 2018 epidemiological study on oral health in the Comunidad Valenciana (Spain). The need for orthodontic treatment was determined by DAI and IOTN. The psychosocial impact was established by the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ). Other variables considered were sex, social class, DMFT index and Body-Mass Index, and having previously worn or presently wearing an orthodontic …

Cognitive vs. affective listening modes and judgments of music - An ERP study

2010

The neural correlates of processing deviations from Western music rules are relatively well known. Less is known of the neural dynamics of top-down listening modes and affective liking judgments in relation with judgments of tonal correctness. In this study, subjects determined if tonal chord sequences sounded correct or incorrect, or if they liked them or not, while their electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured. The last chord of the sequences could be congruous with the previous context, ambiguous (unusual but still enjoyable) or harmonically inappropriate. The cognitive vs. affective listening modes were differentiated in the event-related potential (ERP) responses already before the end…

A novel LC–MS/MS analytical method for detection of articaine and mepivacaine in blood and its application to a preliminary pharmacokinetic study

2020

Local anaesthetics (LAs) are commonly used in surgery, especially in dentistry. They cause a transitory inhibition of nerve signal due to the blockade of the voltage-gated sodium channels. LAs are administrated alone or with vasoconstriction agents, such as adrenaline. Toxicity of LAs is associated to neurological and cardiovascular alterations. Tachycardia, arrhythmia, tremors, tonic-clonic seizure and respiratory depression (at high doses) are the main symptoms of intoxication by LAs. Lidocaine, articaine and mepivacaine are among the most used anaesthetics. This study aimed to fully validated a new method for the simultaneous detection of articaine and mepivacaine in whole blood. Sample …

Validation of the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics questionnaire (Pidaq) in Spanish adolescents

2012

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Spanish version of PIDAQ for application in adolescents. Study Design: The questionnaire was translated, cross-culturally adapted and completed by 627 adolescents (366 12-year-olds and 261 15-year-olds). The adolescents were also examined by 4 examiners who had been calibrated against a gold standard and relative to each other (Kappa >0.85) in determining treatment need with the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) DHC and AC components. Results: Cronbach´s alpha of the translated PIDAQ was 0.90. The 23 items of the questionnaire were divided into four domains t…

A multicenter observational study on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) in advanced cancer and myeloma patients of a cancer network …

2020

Background Incidence of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) related to cancer and myeloma treatments is undetermined, with scarce data varying from 2 to 7.8/million/year in limited investigated populations. A 9-years [2009-2018] regional-wide survey was conducted, deploying the North-Western Italy Cancer Network (“Rete Oncologica Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta”), to assess number and main characteristics of MRONJ cases among myeloma/cancer patients, within a population of 4.5 million inhabitants. Material and Methods MRONJ cases were collected retrospectively from January 2009 to June 2015; from July 2015 to December 2018, data were collected prospectively. Number of new MRONJ cas…
