Abstract. The form-function relationship is a topos of culture, investigated from multiple perspectives: it is useful to understand the role that objects have played in the cultural process. The contribution analyses the photographic representation of objects and aims to highlight the characteristics of objects that emerge through photographic representation: the images by Walker Evans, presented in the portfolio Beauties of the Common Tool («Fortune Magazine», 1955), demonstrate the capacity of photography to highlight the formal and functional characteristics of tools and the role they play in the process of hominization.

Nel De pictura, paragonando la pittura prima a una finestra e poi a uno specchio, Leon Battista Alberti sottolinea l’importanza del punto di vista per la rappresentazione artistica. Nelle Intercenales, che costituiscono il contraltare giocoso del trattato, il cambiamento di punto di vista determina una diversa visione del mondo. The concept of TYPE and the reference to a modality of thought characterized by a typological STYLE undoubtedly constitute characteristic elements of the morphological discourse, whether considered in its Goethean meaning, analysed starting from the many philosophical, naturalistic, poetological sources that come together in Goethe’s thought, or still because of the modern and contemporary developments that arose from the Goethean perspective in philosophy and in the natural sciences.
