Tropical Temperate Toughs over southern Africa: mechanisms and evolution in response to climate change

2015

In the Southern Hemisphere, Southern Africa and the south-west Indian Ocean are one of the three preferred regions where interactions between the tropics and midlatitudes develop. This is the South Indian Convergence Zone (SICZ), where northwest-southeast oriented cloud bands form at the synoptic scale (between 3 and 5 days). These bands are mainly found during the austral summer and are commonly referred to as tropical temperate troughs (TTTs). This research aims at improving our knowledge related to TTTs, with a study on the dynamics associated with these systems, and an analysis of their possible evolution during the 21st century.The first part of this thesis aims at identifying favorab…

Two New Triterpene Saponins from Cyclamen africanumBoiss. & Reuter

2012

Two new oleanane-type triterpene saponins, afrocyclamins A and B (1 and 2, resp.), were isolated from a MeOH extract of the roots of Cyclamen africanum Boiss. & Reuter, together with three known triterpenoid saponins, lysikokianoside, deglucocyclamin I, and its dicrotalic acid derivative. The structures were elucidated, on the basis of 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and mass spectrometry as (3β,20β)-13,28-epoxy-16-oxo-3-{O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(12)-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(14)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(12)]-α-L-arabinopyranosyl}oxy}oleanan-29-al (1) and (3β,16α,20β)-16,28,29-trihydroxy-olean-12-en-3-yl O-4-O-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-oxobutyl)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(12)-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(14)-O-[β-…

Randomised controlled study with cyproterone acetate (100 mg/die) versus Pygeum africanum (200 mg/die) in benign prostatic hypertrophy

1994

A multi-centre comparative study was carried out on 143 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and reduced or no sexual activity. 74 patients were treated with a low dose of CPA (100 mg a day) and 69 with PYG (200 mg a day), administered orally and assigned randomly. The patients were evaluated at 4,12 and 24 weeks. Results showed a significant statistical difference in favour of the CPA treatment for almost all parameters (flow, post-micturitional residue, symptomatological score). There was a decrease in prostate volume, equal to 19.3% compared to the initial values, only in those patients treated with CPA who completed the treatment. Considerable improvement in nicturia and micturit…

The Black Mediterranean: A View from Sicily

2021

While Italy has recently experienced nationalist drives, Sicily and in particular the City of Palermo, one of the major ports of refuge for countless migrants arriving in Europe from the African shores, has distinguished itself as an experimental site where to rethink and challenge notions of residence, mobility, citizenship and belonging. Through a series of cultural initiatives, Palermo has become a hub for frontline artists, writers, intellectuals, and activists who have gathered to explore the historically and contemporary ways in which black voices have been silenced and black bodies have been ambiguously imagined in Western-dominated global culture. Investigating these questions is fu…

Learning, Philosophy, and African Citizenship

2022

This open access book discusses and addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as theoretically discussed and practically experienced. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda. It provides contributions from philosophical ideas drawing on scholars such as Chantal Mouffe, Rosi Braidotti, Theodor Adorno, and Étienne Bal…

État actuel des réseaux de mesures éco-climatiques en Afrique centrale : les ambitions du projet de recherche international FORGREENE.

2016

This work presents an overview of spatio-temporal quality andspatial density of rainfall networks of Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, CAP and DRC, particularly in the recentperiod (1973-2014) through the GSOD international database. Faced with enormous gaps observed, theseresults will help to select metrological and analytical orientations in FORGREENE project (Tropical forestsgreeness and cloudiness in Central Africa: present conditions and future evolution). A comparison with rainfallsatellite estimates (RFE type) also indicates their great potential, provided they are based on in situ validations.

3.9.1. Villagrazia di Carini (PA), [Sito 86]

2016

The materials found in the catacomb of Villagrazia di Carini consist essentially of African Red Slip Ware, coarse ware of probable African production and oil lamps, both Tripolitan and types Atlante VIII and X. Almost all the materials have been regularly published in the reports of the excavations carried out by the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra and the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Palermo, from 2000 to date: a first catalogue have been published in the Proceedings of the IX National Congress of Christian Archeology (2007), followed by updates in Rivista di Archeologia Cristiana (2009) and in a recent study by E. Vitale about the territory of the Early…

Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong’o’s Language(s) of African Literature

2016

One of the most fundamental problems newly emerged national literatures and writers in Africa have had to face in the post-colonial era has been to decide in which language to write in order to appeal to both the native readers in their recently independent countries and to large (international) publishing houses that would foster the sales of their books overseas. An unequivocal decision was difficult to make since, on the one hand, in majority, they wanted to be faithful to family vernacular traditions but, on the other, they wished to disseminate their message to a broader audience in the Western world. This paper, then, attempts to uncover the ideas contained in Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong’o’s Deco…
