The aim of this study was to establish a normative database, assess precision, and evaluate the ability to identify women with low bone mass and to discriminate women with fracture from those without for a highly portable, scanning calcaneal ultrasonometer: the QUS-2. Fourteen hundred and one Caucasian women were recruited for the study. Among them were 794 healthy women 25–84 years of age evenly distributed per 10-year period to establish a normative database. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a safe, inexpensive, and nonradiation method for bone density assessment. QUS correlates with, and predicts fragility fractures comparable to, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Hyperplastic callus formation in osteogenesis imperfecta: CT and MRI findings.

Hyperplastic callus formation is a noteworthy condition in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta because it often mimicks osteosarcoma on radiography. The findings of CT and MRI in hyperplastic callus formation have not been reported. In the presented case, MRI demonstrated contrast enhancement and edema of the surrounding soft tisssue, consistent with benign as well as malignant disease. Computed tomography showed a calcified rim of the lesion which may be a useful feature to rule out osteosarcoma in this condition.

Some genetic determinants of longevity might reside in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses. Many longevity association studies focused their attention on HLA (the human MHC) polymorphisms, but discordant results have been obtained. Sardinians are a relatively isolate population and represent a suitable population for association studies. Some HLA-DR and DQ alleles form very stable haplotypes with a strong linkage disequilibrium. Abstract Girls of age 10–13 yr with Tanner stage I–III maturation status ( n = 155) were measured using the Prodigy (GE Lunar) densitometer. Bone area (BA), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed for the whole body, lumbar spine, and proximal femur using the Thin (T) and Standard (S) scan modes at years 1 and 3 of the study. The differences obtained between the T and S mode at year 1 were 1–2% for the lumbar spine and proximal femur and 5–11% for the whole body. For those girls whose default mode changed from T at year 1 to S mode at year 3, the estimated gain in BA, BMC, and BMD was 3.4%, 7.6%, and 3.1% respectively, lower than that obtained when scanning …

A randomized, controlled, single-blinded 25-wk prospective study was conducted to compare the effects of group-based resistance and agility training on bone, as measured by both dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), in older women with low bone mass. In 1027 lateral radiograms of the ankle in a Caucasian population, 161 plantar and/or dorsal calcaneal spurs (15.7%) were diagnosed. Plantar spurs were more common than dorsal spurs (11.2 and 9.3% respectively). Prevalence of both spurs increases considerably with the rising age. Dorsal spurs appear slightly earlier than plantar spurs. The spur frequencies are similar in left and right feet. The plantar spurs were significantly (p < 0.0001) more common in women than in men in general, while dorsal spurs were more frequent in men than in women up to the age of 70.
