Supporting Diagnosis and Treatment of Scoliosis: Using Augmented Reality to Calculate 3D Spine Models in Real-Time - ARScoliosis
2020
Scoliosis is a complex spinal disorder that mostly affects adolescents and younger population. To avoid and reduce harmful radiation techniques in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis investigation and follow-ups, a novel non-invasive approach is highly recommended and needed in clinical practice. In this paper ARScoliosis application to diagnose, visualize and document spinal condition and particularly adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in real time is presented. This ARScoliosis application is developed in Unity 3D, a game engine, and allows non-invasive quantification of posture and spinal deformity using recently available non-ionizing wide-angle depth sensor Microsoft Azure Kinect DK as a diag…

Chapter 4 3D brainstem topodiagnosis – a voxel-based model analyzing MR imaging data
2006
Publisher Summary This chapter presents a new method of statistically based three-dimensional (3D) brainstem mapping to identify brainstem structures responsible for specific clinical and electrophysiological abnormalities. To ensure reliable correlations, a large cohort of patients with magnetic resonance (MR)-documented brainstem infarctions were recruited in two European neurological institutions—namely, the Department of Neurology, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany, and the Department of Neurological Sciences, “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy. This method minimizes the risk of highlighting vascular territories rather than the structures specifically responsible for th…
Learning Curve in Surgical Treatment of Odontoid Fixation for a Series of Type II C2 Fractures
2019
The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) is a complex anatomical area upon which most of the motion of the upper cervical spine depends [1]. Because of its unique range of motion, the CVJ is subject to several types of traumatic injury; it has been shown that odontoid fractures are the most common ones in the general population and are the most common isolated spinal fractures [2]. Accounting for up to 18% of all cervical fractures, odontoid fractures are the most common ones in elderly patients [3], in whom they account for up to 60% of spinal cord injuries [4].
CT and MR Imaging of Brain Tumors
1989
Our clinical population numbered 8516 patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors who underwent evaluation by computed tomography at the neurosurgical and neuroradiologic departments of the Berlin, Mainz, and Munich centers from 1975 to 1986 and at the Neurosurgical Department of Augsburg Central Hospital from 1983 to 1986. Table 5 lists all the tumors having an incidence greater than 1% in the total population; 98% of the lesions were confirmed histologically (open surgery, stereotactic biopsy, autopsy). “Rare” intracranial tumors having an incidence no greater than 1% are listed in Table 6. The frequencies of the individual tumor types correlate well with the statistical data report…
Thermographic quantitative variables for diabetic foot assessment: preliminary results
2018
The aim of this study was to define aspects of a protocol for a diabetic population by obtaining and evaluating thermographic images following thermal stress (cooling of the sole of the foot with c...
Vascular Changes and Aging
1998
The progress of cardiovascular prevention and the large use of antibiotics have determined in the last fifty years a progressive increase of life duration, especially in the western countries, and so, a noticeable increase of elderly subjects in the population (1,2).
Cuantificación de la fibrosis hepática mediante biomarcadores de imagen
2018
There is a need for early identification of patients with chronic liver diseases due to their increasing prevalence and morbidity-mortality. The degree of liver fibrosis determines the prognosis and therapeutic options in this population. Liver biopsy represents the reference standard for fibrosis staging. However, given its limitations and complications, different non-invasive methods have been developed recently for the in vivo quantification of fibrosis. Due to their precision and reliability, biomarkers' measurements derived from Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance stand out. This article reviews the different acquisition techniques and image processing methods currently used in the evalu…
Wprowadzenie do edukacji osób starszych. W kręgu pedagogiki katolickiej
2020
Education of the elderly has a chance to become a phenomenon of the 21st century. Polish society, like other European and developed countries, is aging faster (GUS forecasts that in 2050 old people will constitute about 40% of the population in Poland). The level of education of the older population also increases proportionally. In the years 2002–2011, an increase in the level of education of the Polish population was recorded, and this also applied to people aged at least 60. There were significant changes in the structure of education of the elderly. The most visible is the increase in the percentage of people with higher education which for this age group amounted to 9,5% in 2011 agains…
