Comparison of Arterial and Venous Blood Flow Between Patients with Pressure Dressing or a New Hemostatic Puncture Closure Device After Cardiac Cathet…

1997

The aim of the study was to compare arterial and venous flow volume in the punctured leg in patients given a conventional pressure dressing and those given a new hemostatic puncture closure device (Angio-Seal) after cardiac catheterization. We prospectively measured blood flow in 25 patients with pressure dressing (group A) and 25 patients with Angio-Seal (group B) after cardiac catheterization. Duplex sonographic measurements were performed at the superficial femoral artery and vein of the punctured leg. In group A measurements were performed before catheterization, during pressure dressing, and after removal of pressure dressing. In group B we performed the measurements before catheteriza…

The effectiveness of the Feldenkrais method: a systematic review of the evidence

2014

The Feldenkrais Method (FM) has broad application in populations interested in improving awareness, health, and ease of function. This review aimed to update the evidence for the benefits of FM, and for which populations. A best practice systematic review protocol was devised. Included studies were appraised using the Cochrane risk of bias approach and trial findings analysed individually and collectively where possible. Twenty RCTs were included (an additional 14 to an earlier systematic review). The population, outcome, and findings were highly heterogeneous. However, meta-analyses were able to be performed with 7 studies, finding in favour of the FM for improving balance in ageing populati…

Indirekte MR-Arthrographie zur Verlaufskontrolle nach autologer osteochondraler Transplantation

2003

Purpose: To evaluate the spectrum of findings in indirect MR-arthrography following autologous osteochondral transplantation. Patients and Methods: 10 patients with autogenous osteochondral homografts underwent indirect MR-arthrography at three, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. The MR protocol at 1.5 T comprised unenhanced imagings with PD- and T 2 -weighted TSE-sequences with and without fat-suppression as well as T 1 -weighted fat-suppressed SE-sequences before and after iv. contrast ad ministration and after active joint exercise. Image analysis was done by two radiologists in conference and comprised the evaluation of signal intensity (Sl) and integrity of the osseous plug and the carti…

Frontal Electroencephalogram Alpha Asymmetry during Mental Stress Related to Workplace Noise

2021

This study aims to investigate the effects of workplace noise on neural activity and alpha asymmetries of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during mental stress conditions. Workplace noise exposure is a pervasive environmental pollutant and is negatively linked to cognitive effects and selective attention. Generally, the stress theory is assumed to underlie the impact of noise on health. Evidence for the impacts of workplace noise on mental stress is lacking. Fifteen healthy volunteer subjects performed the Montreal imaging stress task in quiet and noisy workplaces while their brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography. The salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) was measured before and immedi…

New Hope in Brain Glioma Surgery: The Role of Intraoperative Ultrasound. A Review

2018

Maximal safe resection represents the gold standard for surgery of malignant brain tumors. As regards gross-total resection, accurate localization and precise delineation of the tumor margins are required. Intraoperative diagnostic imaging (Intra-Operative Magnetic Resonance-IOMR, Intra-Operative Computed Tomography-IOCT, Intra-Operative Ultrasound-IOUS) and dyes (fluorescence) have become relevant in brain tumor surgery, allowing for a more radical and safer tumor resection. IOUS guidance for brain tumor surgery is accurate in distinguishing tumor from normal parenchyma, and it allows a real-time intraoperative visualization. We aim to evaluate the role of IOUS in gliomas surgery and to ou…

Impact of the Tiloop Bra mesh in CT images and dose delivery in breast radiotherapy

2012

A new titanized breast mesh, TiLOOP Bra, is currently available for implantation in patients who require radiotherapy. The purpose of this work is to study the dosimetric effect of the presence of a TiLOOP Bra mesh on breast radiation treatment and radiographic imaging. The dosimetric effects have been measured for three X‐ray energies: 1.25 MeV, 6 MV and 18 MV, using radiochromic films placed at three different depths. These depths are representative of mesh location in breast during the radiotherapy treatment and hence, are of interest in this study. In order to assess the disturbance in a radiographic image, different computed tomographic (CT) studies of the mesh have been performed. The…

Endoscopic and surgical resection of T1a/T1b esophageal neoplasms: A systematic review

2013

AIM: To investigate potential therapeutic recommendations for endoscopic and surgical resection of T1a/T1b esophageal neoplasms. METHODS: A thorough search of electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Pubmed and Cochrane Library, from 1997 up to January 2011 was performed. An analysis was carried out, pooling the effects of outcomes of 4241 patients enrolled in 80 retrospective studies. For comparisons across studies, each reporting on only one endoscopic method, we used a random effects meta-regression of the log-odds of the outcome of treatment in each study. “Neural networks” as a data mining technique was employed in order to establish a prediction model of lymph node status in superficial …

Multimodal morphometry and functional magnetic resonance imaging in schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations

2012

To validate a multimodal [structural and functional magnetic resonance (MR)] approach as coincidence brain clusters are hypothesized to correlate with clinical severity of auditory hallucinations.Twenty-two patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fourth edition, DSM-IV) criteria for schizophrenia and experiencing persistent hallucinations together with 28 healthy controls were evaluated with structural and functional MR imaging with an auditory paradigm designed to replicate those emotions related to the patients' hallucinatory experiences. Coincidence maps were obtained by combining structural maps of gray matter reduction with emotional functional increased…

Semi-automatic detection of skin malformations by analysis of spectral images

2013

The multi-spectral imaging technique to reveal skin malformations has been described in this work. Four spectral images taken at polarized monochromatic LED illumination (450nm, 545nm, 660nm and 940 nm) and polarized white LED light imaged by CMOS sensor via cross-oriented polarizing filter were analyzed to calculate chromophore maps. The algorithm based on skin color analysis and user-defined threshold selection allows highlighting of skin areas with predefined chromophore concentration semi-automatically. Preliminary results of clinical tests are presented.
