A regenerative 3D scaffold for inguinal hernia repair. MR imaging and histological cross evidence. Qualitative study
2021
Abstract Background Inguinal hernia is a degenerative disease occurring in a high motile surround. Stopping degeneration and promoting tissue regeneration should be the treatment goal. Groin hernias are conventionally managed with static flat meshes, mostly fixated to the delicate inguinal environment. Far from a regenerative effect, the biologic response of conventional hernia meshes is characterized by a foreign body reaction leading to a stiff/shrunken scar plate, which is often the source of unpleasant complications. Recently, a newly engineered 3D device for inguinal hernia repair – ProFlor-has been developed to produce a regenerative biological response. Unlike conventional hernia mes…
Microvascular obstruction in the right ventricle in reperfused anterior myocardial infarction. Macroscopic and pathologic evidence in a swine model.
2013
article i nfo Introduction: Data on right ventricular (RV) involvement in anterior myocardial infarction are scarce. The presence of RV microvascular obstruction (MVO) in this context has not been analyzed yet. The aim of the present study was to characterize the presence of MVO in the RV in a controlled experimental swine model of reperfused anterior myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: Left anterior descending (LAD) artery-perfused area (thioflavin-S staining after selective infusioninLADartery),infarctsize(lackof triphenyltetrazolium-chloride staining) andMVO (lack of thioflavin-S staininginthe core oftheinfarctedarea) inthe RVwere studied.A quantitative(%of theventricularvolume…
Magnetic resonance microscopy and correlative histopathology of the infarcted heart
2019
Altres ajuts:The present study was supported by the EU Joint Programming Initiative 'A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life' (JPI HDHL INTIMIC-085), Generalitat Valenciana (GV/2018/116), INCLIVA and Universitat de Valencia (program VLC-BIOCLINIC 20-nanomIRM-2016A). Delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MR) is the gold-standard for non-invasive assessment after myocardial infarction (MI). MR microscopy (MRM) provides a level of detail comparable to the macro objective of light microscopy. We used MRM and correlative histopathology to identify infarct and remote tissue in contrast agent-free multi-sequence MRM in swine MI hearts. One control group (n = 3 swine) and two experimenta…
Plain film, CT and MRI sensibility in the evaluation of intraorbital foreign bodies in an in vitro model of the orbit and in pig eyes.
2000
Detection and characterization of intraorbital foreign bodies (IFB) is fundamental in acute trauma setting, preventing inflammatory sequelae or complications related to IFB movements when a MRI study is planned. Papers concerning plain film and CT sensibility in IFB detection show controversial results. For this reason we investigated plain film, CT and MRI sensibility in the evaluation of IFB. For an in vitro model, specimens of dry and fresh wood, glass, iron, plastic and graphite were immersed in animal lard and in a 0.9 % sodium chloride plus 3.5 g/dl human serum albumin solution. Specimens of different size and nature where also implanted into enucleated pig eyes. Air bubbles were intr…
Imaging of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Complications: Comparison of Whole Body Low-Dose Computed Tomography and Radiographic Shunt Series.
2016
OBJECTIVE To determine diagnostic value and radiation exposure of low-dose computed tomography (LD-CT) compared to radiographic shunt series (SS) for the detection of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt complications. METHODS Fourteen VP shunts were implanted in 7 swine cadavers. Mechanical complications were induced in 50% of VP shunts. Low-dose CT (80 kVp, 10 mAs, Pitch = 1.5) and SS were acquired. Dose area product (DAP) and effective doses for SS and LD-CT were collected. Scoring of diagnostic confidence and blinded readings of SS and CT data were performed. RESULTS The sensitivity of LD-CT was high (0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.91-1.00) with excellent interobserver agreement (κ = 0.88)…
Accuracy of automatic airway morphometry in computed tomography-correlation of radiological-pathological findings.
2010
Abstract Objectives Airway morphology shows characteristic changes in different pathologies. This study assesses the accuracy of a current automatic airway assessment technique by correlating CT images of porcine airways to histological slices of the same localization. Materials and methods Four isolated and ventilated porcine lungs were frozen in a liquid nitrogen bath and examined with a CT scanner (MDCT). This technique both preserved normal radiomorphological appearance and made it possible to slice the specimens for histological examination for subsequent correlation. The parameters wall thickness (WT), wall percentage (WP), and total diameter (TD) were assessed by computer-aided measu…
Organisation of care and initial management of severe head injury in Spain: Results of a national survey
2016
Abstract Objective The main objective of the study is to obtain knowledge about the organisation of care for severe head trauma as well as the initial management of these patients in Neurosurgical Departments in Spain. Material and method A 22-item questionnaire was designed and sent to 59 Neurosurgical Departments. The aim of the questionnaire was to collect data regarding the general profile of the patients with a severe head injury, the general characteristics of the hospitals, the initial care of these patients, the monitoring techniques used, and the measures used to control Intracranial pressure (ICP). Results Of the 59 Neurosurgical Departments identified, 29 (49.2%) completed the qu…
