Stroke in the young in sicily: Prevalence and clinical features
1998
Few epidemiological reports focus on the prevalence of stroke in the young population. As part of a neuroepidemiological survey on the total population of three Sicilian municipalities, we assessed the prevalence of stroke in the young, describing the clinical features of each patient. We screened 14,832 subjects younger than 40 years with a door-to-door method and a two-phase study design. Phase 1 consisted of a questionnaire and a brief neurological examination; phase 2 was an extensive evaluation performed by a neurologist. On the prevalence day (November 1, 1987), we ascertained six cases of stroke (prevalence rate, 40.5/100,000). Three were hemorrhagic, one ischemic, and two of uncerta…
Oral lesions and immune status of HIV infected adults from eastern Nepal
2013
Objective: To document the prevalence, age and gender distribution of oral lesions in HIV infected adults and the influence of highly active antiretroviral therapy and correlate them to the immune status of the patients. Materials and Methods: Oral lesions were diagnosed by a detailed physical examination by trained and calibrated examiners according to the case definitions established by the Oral HIV/AIDS research alliance. Demographic details, risk behavior patterns and oral symptoms and habits were collected by a questionnaire. Results: 81 patients; 54 men and 27 women aged between 20 ' 55 years participated in the study. A total of 49 patients; 60.5% had some oral lesion when examined. …
Math homework : Parental help and children’s academic outcomes
2019
In the present study, we examined the longitudinal relations between child-perceived parental help with math homework (i.e., support and control), children's math skills, and mother-reported task persistent behavior in homework situations. A total of 624 mother–child dyads were followed across Grade 6 and Grade 9, controlling for Grade 3 variables. At each measurement point, children completed math tests, and their mothers evaluated task persistence during homework. In Grades 6 and 9, children reported their perceptions of their parents’ help with math homework. First, the results showed that perceived support in Grade 6 predicted an increase in persistence during homework in Grade 9. Secon…
Kuvataidekasvatuksen uudistaminen ja asema suomalaisessa peruskoulu-uudistuksessa kuvaamataidon opettajien näkökulmasta : haastattelututkimus
2013
Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, kuinka kuvataidekasvatus ja taidepedagoginen ajattelutapa muuttui peruskoulu-uudistuksen aikana (1970-‐1977). Tutkimus painottuu nimenomaan tuohon aikaan uudistuksessa mukana olleiden kuvaamataidonopettajien näkökulmiin aiheesta. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu viidestä haastattelusta, siirtymävaiheenmateriaalista, sekä aiempaan tutkimukseen peruskoulu-uudistuksesta. Haastattelut on toteutettu puolistruktuoituina teemahaastatteluina. Tutkimusaineiston analysointi perustuu viiteen narratiiviin, jotka historiallisen kirjallisuuden kanssa yhdessä muodostavat yhden suuremman kokonaisuuden. Aineisto perustuu suurelta osin muistitietoon, joten tavoitteenani on esit…
Recent advances on HIV DNA vaccines development: Stepwise improvements to clinical trials.
2019
According to WHO (World Health Organization) reports, more than 770,000 people died from HIV and almost 1.7 million people becoming newly infected in the worldwide in 2018. Therefore, many attempts should be done to produce a forceful vaccine to control the AIDS. DNA-based vaccines have been investigated for HIV vaccination by researches during the recent 20 years. The DNA vaccines are novel approach for induction of both type of immune responses (cellular and humoral) in the host cells and have many advantages including high stability, fast and easy of fabrication and absence of severe side effects when compared with other vaccination methods. Recent studies have been focused on vaccine de…
Introduction to molecular topology: basic concepts and application to drug design.
2012
In this review it is dealt the use of molecular topology (MT) in the selection and design of new drugs. After an introduction of the actual methods used for drug design, the basic concepts of MT are defined, including examples of calculation of topological indices, which are numerical descriptors of molecular structures. The goal is making this calculation familiar to the potential students and allowing a straightforward comprehension of the topic. Finally, the achievements obtained in this field are detailed, so that the reader can figure out the great interest of this approach.
Twofold coordinated Ge defects induced by gamma-ray irradiation in Ge-doped SiO2
2008
We report an experimental study by photoluminescence, optical absorption and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance measurements on the effects of exposure of Ge-doped amorphous SiO2 to gamma ray radiation at room temperature. We have evidenced that irradiation at doses of the order of 1 MGy is able to generate Ge-related defects, recognizable from their optical properties as twofold coordinated Ge centers. Until now, such centers, responsible for photosensitivity of Ge-doped SiO2, have been induced only in synthesis procedures of materials. The found result evidences a role played by gamma radiation in generating photosensitive defects and could furnish a novel basis for photosensitive pattern wr…
The FiR 1 photon beam model adjustment according to in-air spectrum measurements with the Mg(Ar) ionization chamber.
2014
Abstract The mixed neutron–photon beam of FiR 1 reactor is used for boron–neutron capture therapy (BNCT) in Finland. A beam model has been defined for patient treatment planning and dosimetric calculations. The neutron beam model has been validated with an activation foil measurements. The photon beam model has not been thoroughly validated against measurements, due to the fact that the beam photon dose rate is low, at most only 2% of the total weighted patient dose at FiR 1. However, improvement of the photon dose detection accuracy is worthwhile, since the beam photon dose is of concern in the beam dosimetry. In this study, we have performed ionization chamber measurements with multiple b…

Harmonic solution of semiconductor transport equations for microwave and millimetre-wave device modelling
2004
The transport equations for charges in a semiconductor have been solved for a periodic voltage excitation by means of a harmonic approach, for modelling of microwave and millimetre-wave active devices. The solution is based on the expansion of the unknown physical quantities in Fourier series in the time domain, and on the discretisation in the space domain. A Waveform-Balance technique in the time domain is used to solve the resulting non-linear equations system. In this way the time step is determined only by Nyquist's sampling requirements at the operating frequency, irrespective of the relaxation times of the semiconductor. This approach allows for a longer time step, and therefore a sh…
