Naturalistic music and dance: Cortical phase synchrony in musicians and dancers
2018
Expertise in music has been investigated for decades and the results have been applied not only in composition, performance and music education, but also in understanding brain plasticity in a larger context. Several studies have revealed a strong connection between auditory and motor processes and listening to and performing music, and music imagination. Recently, as a logical next step in music and movement, the cognitive and affective neuro-sciences have been directed towards expertise in dance. To understand the versatile and overlapping processes during artistic stimuli, such as music and dance, it is necessary to study them with continuous naturalistic stimuli. Thus, we used long exce…
Fractionating auditory priors: A neural dissociation between active and passive experience of musical sounds
2019
Learning, attention and action play a crucial role in determining how stimulus predictions are formed, stored, and updated. Years-long experience with the specific repertoires of sounds of one or more musical styles is what characterizes professional musicians. Here we contrasted active experience with sounds, namely long-lasting motor practice, theoretical study and engaged listening to the acoustic features characterizing a musical style of choice in professional musicians with mainly passive experience of sounds in laypersons. We hypothesized that long-term active experience of sounds would influence the neural predictions of the stylistic features in professional musicians in a distinct…
Prospectives to tractor cabin design with computational acoustics tools
2011
Computational acoustical models allow automated optimization of tractor design with respect to acoustic properties, which could speed up significantly the design process of tractor cabin prototypes. This article gives insightful prospectives to the tractor design process by considering modern computational acoustics technology. Mathematical formulation for a system consisting of vibrating elastic tractor structure and airfilled acoustic enclosure are given and a related numerical solution technique with finite element method (FEM) is presented. Simulation results produced with commercially available software are reviewed. nonPeerReviewed

Numerical methods for acoustics and noise control
2010
Artikkeliväitöskirja. Sisältää yhteenveto-osan ja viisi artikkelia. Article dissertation. Contains an introduction part and five articles. This dissertation considers numerical methods for wave propagation modelling and noise control. The first part of the dissertation discusses an efficient method for solving time-harmonic wave equations in acoustic (the Helmholtz equation) and elastic domains (the Navier equation). The solver is based on preconditioning a Krylov subspace method, such as GMRES, with approximations of damped variants of the corresponding wave equations. An algebraic multigrid method is used in approximating the inverse of damped operators. The method can be used in complex …
Multi-objective actuator placement optimization for local sound control evaluated in a stochastic domain
2011
A method to find optimal locations and properties of anti-noise actuators in local noise control system is considered. The local noise control performance is approximated by a finite element method based approach, that attempts to estimate the average performance of optimal active noise control (ANC) system. The local noise control uses a fixed number of circular actuators that are located on the boundary of a three-dimensional enclosed acoustic space. Actuator signals are used to minimize the known harmonic noise at specified locations. The average noise reduction is maximized at two frequency ranges by adjusting the anti-noise actuator configuration, which is a non-linear multi-objective …
Virtual violin in the digital domain : physical modeling and model-based sound synthesis of violin and its interactive application in virtual environ…
2004
Viulun mallintaminen on tunnustettu maailmanlaajuisesti erittäin haasteelliseksi ongelmaksi. This thesis discusses techniques for physical modeling and model-based sound synthesis of violin, and human-computer interaction in virtual domain. The violin model is considered by means of controlling a vi…

Mild Dissonance Preferred Over Consonance in Single Chord Perception
2016
Previous research on harmony perception has mainly been concerned with horizontal aspects of harmony, turning less attention to how listeners perceive psychoacoustic qualities and emotions in single isolated chords. A recent study found mild dissonances to be more preferred than consonances in single chord perception, although the authors did not systematically vary register and consonance in their study; these omissions were explored here. An online empirical experiment was conducted where participants ( N = 410) evaluated chords on the dimensions of Valence, Tension, Energy, Consonance, and Preference; 15 different chords were played with piano timbre across two octaves. The results sugg…
Systemaattinen päättely asteikkoteoriassa
2017
Toisessa sovellusaluee…
