Traces of ison and biphonies in Byzantine chant of Sicilian Arbëresh

2012

After an introduction on the relevance of the written musical source in the Byzantine tradition of the Arbëresh minority in Sicily, the paper focuses on a small group of them containing multipart musics, mainly ison and biphonies. The paper explores, mostly, the performative aspects of these sources in the contemporary religious practices, and their symbolic relevance as part of a very specific musical and cultural identity.

A Greek-Byzantine musical island inside an Italian island: the Byzantine chant of the Arbëresh of Sicily

2015

The Albanians (the Arbëresh) constitute the largest linguistic ethnic “minority” in Sicily. The community is made up of around 20,000 people living in 5 towns, all of which are in the province of Palermo. The most important of these villages is Piana degli Albanesi, where the Bishop (whose Greek name is Eparca) of the Diocese (the Eparchìa) of the Albanians of Sicily has is seat. The cultural identity of the Albanians of Sicily is basically expressed by the Arbëresh language and the Byzantine rite. The chant is a fundamental element of the Arbëresh-Byzantine Liturgies and Offices (Matins, Vespers, Hours). The liturgical repertoire is very wide and accompanies the entire liturgical year. The…

Introduction: Father Bartolomeo Di Salvo and his transcriptions of the Byzantine chants among the Albanians of Sicily

2016

Father Bartolomeo Di Salvo established an extensive collection of transcriptions of the Canti ecclesiastici della tradizione Siculo-Albanese (Ecclesiastical chants of the Italian-Albanian tradition in Sicily) in the 1950s and early 1960s. It was planned that this collection would be published soon after as the fifth volume in the Serie Subsidia of the Monumenta Musicae Byzantinae (MMB). A plan that in 2016, after about 50 years from the conception of the original editorial project has finally been realized with this publication. The collection of Father Bartolomeo Di Salvo consist of 259 pages, containing transcriptions of 484 items: whole chants, variants and analyses of formulaic schemes …

Ancora sulle "esplosive palatali" nelle inchieste dell'Atlante Linguistico del Mediterraneo (ALM): i punti albanesi

2021

Settore L-FIL-LET/12 - Linguistica ItalianaAmong the «Editorial problems» that emerged during the control and organization of the materials coming from the survey campaign of the Atlante Linguistico del Mediterraneo (ALM) Berruto (1971-1973) notes the proliferation and heterogeneity of some graphemic choices made by different field researchers. As they were engaged in a more or less punctual transcription of the answers obtained they had interpreted and solved differently some of the directions provided in the phonetic transcription system that accompanied the Questionnaire. The picture relating to the transcription of some consonants of the palatal sector had emerged as particularly complex since the graphemes (and the corresponding phones) foreseen in the original system (ALM 1959) were insufficient. Not even the 1971 updates meant to improve the representation of some phonetic features emerged from the investigations in the operations of Response reviewing allowed to obtain a clear homogeneous picture regarding the «plosive palatal» consonants. With regard to the phonetic trait under scrutiny I have already had the opportunity to propose a path aiming to the achievement of possible operational solutions. This has taken place in view of the planned simplification / homologation and transcoding phase from the ALM original system to the IPA one - while proceeding from the examination of the Schedoni’s current state with regard to the surveys referring to central-southern Italy Corsica and Sicily (see Matranga 2019). The scope is now to investigate the same phonetic trait as proven in the materials about the surveys carried out by Lirak Dodbiba in the ALM’s three Albanian points.

Per un approccio settoriale allo studio del mutamento lessicale nelle varietà italoalbanesi. Il campo semantico degli animali

2021

We have already had the opportunity to demonstrate to what extent the distinction between “common” and “specialised” lexicon is a crucial key to the evaluation of processes of lexical substitution within Sicilian-Albanian contexts. Unlike to what happens to the dynamics of contact among the varieties of Italo-Romance repertoires (where dialectal variants seem to be better preserved in some experiential fields that are typical of traditional activities), in the Sicilian-Albanian context, the original (Albanian) lexicon seems to be more preserved within the setting of specific experiencial fields of a greater community sharing (and, substantially, in the urban context). Instead, the concepts …

Considerazioni su alcune dinamiche sociolinguistiche in contesto siculoalbanese

2015

This study investigates diverse sociolinguistic dynamics relating to Sicilian Albanian communities. In light of a survey of the socio-demographic and socio-economic aspects characterising the communities under scrutiny, it has emerged that these communities have a twofold configuration: on the one hand, the community of Piana degli Albanesi presents features of mobility and typically “urban” details, on the other hand, the communities of S. Cristina and Contessa Entellina can be distinguished by an apparent state of isolation and typically “rural” traits. By contrast to what mainstream tendencies may encourage thinking about, the urban socio-economic structured community is sociolinguistica…

Fare rotta verso nuove terre: la diaspora greco-albanese della prima età moderna

2021

The contribution aims to frame the diasporic phenomenon of the 15th-16th centuries of the Balkan populations from areas roughly corresponding today to Albania and Greece, reading it according to a plurality of levels and intertwining that characterize the Mediterranean modern age history. Specifically, the paper summarizes the most recent reflections on the subject and focuses on the reasons that triggered the migration flows and on the historiographical narration over the centuries.

The history of Albanian emigration to Italy constitutes a special chapter of Italian albanological research. The essay proposes to define a chronological grid of …
