Candida Albicans congenital infection in a preterm newborn

Intrauterine infections may be due to a variety of pathogens other than the TORCH groups ones. Although Candida Albicans is frequently isolated within the urogenital tract of pregnant women, the fetal infection is rarely reported. We now report on a 26 weeks preterm baby in whom a Candida infection was diagnosed at birth in relation to gravidic anamnesis and typical micotic manifestations upon the placenta and the umbilical cord. Intensive cares and pharmacological treatment induced a progressive improvement of the clinical course and normalization of the laboratory parameters.

We have demonstrated that the expression of Candida albicans genes involved in translation and protein folding (EFB1 and SSB1) complements the phenotype of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants. Global transcriptional profiling ofCandida albicans cwt1 null mutant

CaCwt1p is a Candida albicans putative transcriptional factor homologue to Rds2p in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The lack of this protein in S. cerevisiae leads to a pleiotropic resistance to drugs and defects in cell wall architecture that are also detectable in C. albicans. It is also known that CaCwt1p is mainly expressed in the stationary growth phase of this fungus. In order to elucidate the role of CWT1, transcriptome analysis of the mutant strain was performed in exponential and stationary growth phases. Candidiasis has become a prevalent infection in different types of immunocompromised patients. The cell wall of Candida albicans plays important functions during the host-fungus interactions. Cell wall (surface) proteins of C. albicans are major elicitors of host immune responses during candidiasis, and represent candidates for vaccine development. Groups of mice were vaccinated subcutaneously with a beta-mercaptoethanol (beta-ME) extract from C. albicans containing cell wall proteins. Vaccinated mice were then infected with a lethal dose of C. albicans. External iliac artery pseudoaneurysm complicating renal transplantation

Objective: To assess the etiology, management and outcome of iliac pseudoaneurysms following renal transplantation. Methods: Eleven patients who underwent repair between 1982 and 2007 were identified. Five (Group 1) presented pseudoaneurysm at the anastomosis of the donor renal and native iliac arteries, and six (Group 2) presented iliac pseudoaneurysm following transplant nephrectomy. Expression of the fibrinogen binding mannoprotein and the laminin receptor of Candida albicans in vitro and in infected tissues.

We have previously reported a 37 kDa laminin-binding protein (p37) and a 58 kDa fibrinogen-binding mannoprotein (mp58) on the surface of Candida albicans. A few yeast cells expressed both functional receptors at the surface while germ tubes expressed a functional mp58 fibrinogen but not a functional p37 laminin receptor. These receptors were heterogeneously dispersed at the surface as shown by binding of rabbit antiserum to mp58 (PAb anti-mp58) and antiserum to the human high affinity laminin receptor. Purification of a biologically active recombinant glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase fromCandida albicans

We report here the purification of a functionally active recombinant glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) from Candida albicans. The GAPDH protein encoded by the TDH1 gene was obtained as a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein by expression in the vector pGEX-4T-3, and purified by affinity chromatography and thrombin digestion. The purified protein displays GAPDH enzymatic activity (42 micromol NADH min(-1) mg(-1)) as well as the laminin and fibronectin binding activities previously described.
