Photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes in aqueous suspension of home prepared titanium dioxide: 2. Intrinsic and surface features…

2008

Some intrinsic electronic properties of home prepared (HP) TiO2 catalysts were investigated by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and quasi-Fermi level measurements. These powders were used for carrying out the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and CO2 in water; the selectivity for aldehyde formation was enhanced by the addition of small amounts of ethanol, a typical hole trap. The values of band gap, valence band and conduction band edges are almost identical for all the HP samples in which anatase phase is predominant, whereas appreciable differences can be noticed for an HP sample containing high amount of rutile phase. A comparative ATR-FTIR study of the HP cataly…

Active surfaces engineered by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors for selectively detecting sugar alcohols.

2016

We introduce active surfaces generated by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors on a solid support for sensitive sugar alcohols detection. First, such selective nanoreactors were engineered in solution by simultaneous encapsulation of specific enzymes in copolymer polymersomes, and insertion of membrane proteins for selective conduct of sugar alcohols. Despite the artificial surroundings, and the thickness of the copolymer membrane, functionality of reconstituted Escherichia coli glycerol facilitator (GlpF) was preserved, and allowed selective diffusion of sugar alcohols to the inner cavity of the polymersome, where encapsulated ribitol dehydrogenase (RDH) enzymes served as biosensing e…

Diastereoselective synthesis of 6-functionalized 4-aryl-1,3-oxazinan-2-ones and their application in the synthesis of 3-aryl-1,3-aminoalcohols and 6-…

2010

Abstract Halocyclocarbamation of benzyl N -(1-phenyl-3-butenyl)carbamates afforded 6-functionalized 4-aryl-1,3-oxazinan-2-ones with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivity depending on the N -substituent. Importantly, in contrast to reported cyclocarbamations of homoallylic carbamates, which are generally trans -diastereoselective, cyclization of N -unsubstituted Cbz-protected homoallylamines led to cis -1,3-oxazinan-2-ones, predominantly. The use of N -benzylated and in situ prepared N -silylated derivatives resulted however in trans -selectivity. Transition states are proposed to explain the stereochemical influence of the N -substituent on the cyclocarbamations. The functionalized 1,3…

Calorimetric and Volumetric Investigations of the Effect of the Hydrophobicity of the Surfactant on the Binding between (Ethylene oxide)13-(propylene…

2004

The enthalpy and the volume of transfer (DeltaY(t)) of the unassociated (ethylene oxide)(13)-(propylene oxide)(30)-(ethylene oxide)(13) (L64) from water to the aqueous sodium alkanoate solutions as functions of the surfactant concentrations (m(S)) were determined at 298 K. The surfactants studied are sodium hexanoate, sodium heptanoate, sodium octanoate, sodium undecanoate, and sodium dodecanoate. As a general feature, for the short alkyl chain surfactants, DeltaY(t) describes an S-shaped curve in the range of m(S) analyzed whereas for the more hydrophobic surfactants the DeltaY(t) vs m(S) trends exhibit maxima which appear at ms values very close to the critical micellar concentration in w…

Adrenergic modulation of astroglial phospholipase D activity and cell proliferation.

1999

As phospholipase D (PLD) activation has been associated with mitogenic signalling in several cell types, we tested an association between adrenergic activation of PLD and cellular proliferation in primary cultures of rat cortical astrocytes. In 2-week old cultures, PLD activation by noradrenaline (EC50: 0.49 microM) was inhibited by prazosin, a specific antagonist at alpha1-adrenergic receptors (IC50: 0.23 microM). Adrenergic PLD activation was not affected by genistein, an inhibitor of tyrosine kinases, or by Ro 31-8220, an inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), but was dose-dependently depressed in the presence of brefeldin A (1-100 microg/ml), an inhibitor of ARF activation. In experiments…

Titania Photocatalysts for Selective Oxidations in Water

2011

Heterogeneous photocatalysis by polycrystalline semiconductor oxides is an unconventional technology that has been mainly applied for the degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants in both the vapor and liquid phase. The application of photocatalysis in synthetic routes has also been researched in recent years, demonstrating its viability as an alternative route in organic chemistry. This work illustrates the main findings in the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis to the oxidation of organic compounds dissolved in water, free of any organic co-solvent. Two main aspects of the oxidative process have been studied: the first one is the partial oxidation of various mono-substitute…

Lung fixation for the preservation of air spaces.

2004

The procedures for the fixation of entire lungs of small rodents are presented together with various techniques used to verify the structural integrity of the lung tissue. To achieve this, the lungs were dissected out from rats and mice killed by ether overdose. The specimens were rinsed with isotonic saline and fixation solution under low vacuum conditions. After fixation, they were dried using alcohol and stored in a noncollapsed state (i.e., state of inhalation). Light and scanning electron microscopy as well as magnetic resonance imaging using hyperpolarized 3He were employed to verify the intact state on interalveolar septa and walls of smaller bronchi as well as accessibility of the a…

Soluble/MOF-Supported Palladium Single Atoms Catalyze the Ligand-, Additive-, and Solvent-Free Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols to Benzoic Acids.

2021

Metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) promise great rewards in terms of metal atom efficiency. However, the requirement of particular conditions and supports for their synthesis, together with the need of solvents and additives for catalytic implementation, often precludes their use under industrially viable conditions. Here, we show that palladium single atoms are spontaneously formed after dissolving tiny amounts of palladium salts in neat benzyl alcohols, to catalyze their direct aerobic oxidation to benzoic acids without ligands, additives, or solvents. With this result in hand, the gram-scale preparation and stabilization of Pd SACs within the functional channels of a novel methyl-cystein…

Sequential Iron-Catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) Cross-Coupling of Chlorobenzamides/Chemoselective Amide Reduction and Reductive Deuteration to Benzylic Alcoh…

2023

Benzylic alcohols are among the most important intermediates in organic synthesis. Recently, the use of abundant metals has attracted significant attention due to the issues with the scarcity of platinum group metals. Herein, we report a sequential method for the synthesis of benzylic alcohols by a merger of iron catalyzed cross-coupling and highly chemoselective reduction of benzamides promoted by sodium dispersion in the presence of alcoholic donors. The method has been further extended to the synthesis of deuterated benzylic alcohols. The iron-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling exploits the high stability of benzamide bonds, enabling challenging C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling with alkyl Grign…
