High-Pressure Phase Diagram and Superionicity of Alkaline Earth Metal Difluorides

We study the high-pressure–high-temperature phase diagram and superionicity of alkaline earth metal (AEM) difluorides (AF2, A = Ca, Sr, Ba) with first-principles simulation methods. We find that the superionic behavior of SrF2 and BaF2 at high pressures differ appreciably from that previously reported for CaF2 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 113, 235902]. Specifically, the critical superionic temperature of SrF2 and BaF2 in the low-pressure cubic fluorite phase is not reduced by effect of compression, and the corresponding high-pressure orthorhombic contunnite phases become superionic at elevated temperatures. Observation of chemical reactions between alkaline-earth oxides and tungsten at high pressure and high temperature

Abstract The potential chemical reactions of alkaline-earth oxides (AeO with Ae: Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) and tungsten are studied at high pressure and high temperature. At pressures ranging from 5 to 10 GPa and temperatures of 2000 K, a noticeable reaction between AeO and powder tungsten (W) was detected. As a product of the reaction, scheelite-structured orthotungstates (AeWO 4 ) were formed. The reactivity of alkaline-earth oxides with tungsten increases in the order Ca 2 →AeWO 4 .

An improved cathode for alkaline fuel cells

Abstract The use of nickel foam as an electrode substrate in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) has been investigated for bipolar cells incorporating an electrically conducting gas diffusion layer (GDL). Improved performance, compared to a previous design, was obtained by adding an extra active layer (AL) composed of manganese (IV) oxide (MnO2) deposited onto carbon black. This new cathode design performed significantly better (130 mA cm−2 at 0.8 V and 25 °C) than the previous design (35 mA cm−2 under the same condition), especially at higher potential. Abstract The realm of alkaline-based fuel cells has with the arrival of anionic exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) taken a great step to replace traditional liquid electrolyte alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). Clean analytical method for the determination of propoxur

Abstract A method has been developed for the determination of propoxur, a carbamate pesticide, by means of its reaction with p-aminophenol (PAP). The method involves the reaction, in the presence of KIO4, between the quinoneimine form of PAP and the deprotonated form of 2-isopropoxyphenol, obtained by the alkaline hydrolysis of propoxur, to provide an indophenol dye which absorbs at 600 nm. Trace element partitioning in lamproitic magmas—the Gaussberg olivine leucitite

Abstract Partition coefficients for compatible and incompatible trace elements for use in modelling the origin and evolution of lamproitic and other potassic rocks are reported. These are based on values obtained by in situ determination using laser ablation microprobe-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) on mineral/glass pairs in examples of the Gaussberg olivine leucitite, a classic leucite lamproite. Leucite/melt partition coefficients for 32 elements show values above 1 only for Cs and Rb, whereas values for Ni, Ga and Co are 0.4–0.1. We have previously described a promising alternative to conventional synthetic bone biomaterials using vaterite, a metastable CaCO3 polymorph that increases the local Ca2+ concentration in vitro and leads to an oversaturation of phosphate, the primary bone mineral. This stimulates a natural bone-like mineralisation in a short period of time. In this study, sterile and endotoxin-free vaterite particles were synthesised in a nearly quantitative yield. Abstract Three new electroactive ligands, 3a, 3b and 3c, that contain the biphenyl frameworks in their structure were prepared. These new ligands presented three interesting characteristics: 1) they exhibited a reversible oxidation, 2) the oxidation induced a conformational change in the crown moiety and 3) they had two different coordination centers, the crown ether and the dimethylamino groups. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies using alkali, alkali-earth and mercury salts were carried out.

During pregnancy, they might affect maternal metabolic status and there after fetal development. In this work, we studied metabolic and redox effects of low dose alpha-cypermethrin exposure in pregnant rats and their offspring.
