Tales of saviours and iconoclasts. On the provenance of "the Dead Sea Scrolls of Buddhism"
2021
Academic research on newly discovered ancient Buddhist manuscripts is largely based on objects that come from the antiquities market and to a much lesser degree on objects coming from documented and controlled archaeological excavations. Despite their being unprovenanced, collectors and scholars often present such objects with narratives mimicking provenance. The use of the label "Dead Sea Scrolls" attached to archaeological material without connections to Judaism or early Christianity is a prevalent example of this scholarly praxis. In this article, we deconstruct provenance narratives associated with the undocumented Buddhist manuscripts in the Schøyen Collection and discuss their implica…
2013
This article studies the myth of Icarus as it is translated in the first part of Alfonso X's General estoria. Its analysis highlights aspects that are usually found in the mythographical episodes of the Alfonsine estoria, particularly linked with its possible sources and its internal characteristics. The latter ones are defined by the anonymity of the quote and an evident moral intention. Regarding the sources, if it is known that the mythography gets to the Alfonsine text through two paths, the gloss in the manuscripts and a mythographical work, the exact source or sources used by Alfonsine historians are still unidentified. I have begun searching where the elements that are found in no pr…
«Enrique de Villena y Curial e Güelfa»
2018
Terrorism and the Allegory of the Lone Wolf: From 9/11 to COVID-19
2021
The lone wolf is a personality type that symbolizes individualism and a deep yet sometimes dangerous quest for self-search. At its very extreme, this search turns out to become hatred for anything that these wolves cannot identify themselves with. In this regard, even some societies are lone wolves. We have lone wolf groups, communities, societies, and even nation-states. By analysis, terrorists carry certain traits of lone wolves, although not every lone wolf would be(come) a terrorist. Some rather grow into hermits and saints. Globalization, a central theme of this book, has a lot to do with the development of the lone wolf trait the way we see it now. Instead of flattening the world’s cu…
Laurentius Lotus [Lorenzo Lotto]. De Amore
2014
ABSTRACT: In the study presented here of some portraits by Lorenzo Lotto, I have attempted to establish a reading of the image, of the details that the artist offers us in his canvas which, to my way of thinking, orient us towards the semantic meaning of the painting. In this concrete case I deal with the theme of love. This entails, therefore, an in-depth exploration of the story that the artist wishes to consider through his work, with the aim of recording and classifying the image by analyzing both its graphic as well as literary precedents. KEY WORDS: Lorenzo Lotto, Portrait, Love, Allegory, Iconography.
2014
ABSTRACT: Allegorical and emblematic images do not appear exclusively in visual literature: Genres such as the Italian or the Italian-inspired Counter-Reformation oratorios, cantatas and sacred or moral operas often contain images quite similar in form and function to those published in the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth-century European collections of emblems. This article analyses some of these parallelisms in the particular case of Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (c. 1707), by the librettist and patron of the arts Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj and the composer Georg Friedrich Handel. KEYWORDS: Emblem, Opera, Oratorio, Academy, Discourse, Allegory, Rhetoric, Aural, Visual, Pamphilj,…
2020
ABSTRACT: The allegory of the body as a prison of the soul was visually depicted as a skeleton that imprisons a figure with childish features. One of the earliest examples of this image is the emblem «Infelix ego homo!» included in Herman Hugo’s Pia Desideria (1624); however the pictura was incorporated in other media and contexts allowing its survival even to the end of the 19th century. In Mexico, it evolved from an ascetic-moralistic book to a popular pamphlet of ghostly apparitions revealed in dreams. How did this emblem –based on Neoplatonic philosophy– evolve from a book written in Latin to a popular nineteenth century pamphlet? Did it conserve part of its original meaning?

The Allegory of Holocaust
2017
The current bloody conflict between Israelis and Palestine in Middle East has widely approached by social scientists and humanists as a moral campaign to impose the human dignity. Although in some respect, literature would play a leading role in narrowing both sides, the fact is that in digital times Holocaust is far from being a closed issue. As a platform towards victimization or political oppression, Holocaust still remains in the heart of West as well as the negative effects of depersonalizing subject identities. The nature of any genocide is associated to the power of Gods to select who lives or not, in the same way, Noah abode the decision of God to destroy a world which unfits with h…
Humility: Virgin or Virtue?
2021
GV/2021/123 This paper considers Marian iconography in which …
