Nella Sicilia del XVII secolo per iniziativa delle nobiltà locale sorgono numerose città nuove, che oltre ad accrescere il prestigio sociale del fondatore rispondono a un preciso programma della Corona: rimpinguare le casse dell’erario e popolare le campagne dell’isola per incrementare la produzione agricola. Molte di queste città vengono “ritratte” in opere pittoriche, celebrative dell’atto di fondazione, la cui accentuata carica retorica spesso travalica l’effettiva realtà spaziale, come nel caso di Niscemi e Palma di Montechiaro, qui analizzate attraverso lo studio dell’iconografia storica.

The so-called fibrogenic cytokines, able to induce the growth of fibroblasts and their differentiation into myofibroblasts and to stimulate their production of extracellular matrix, are involved in the genesis of Dupuytren’s contracture. Although many studies have been made of biomolecular aspects of palmar fibromatosis, practical applications from them are still far from imminent because of the real difficulty of blocking their action in vivo, even in a chronic, progressive lesion such as Dupuytren’s disease. Consequently, surgical excision of the palmar fascia still remains the treatment of choice.

Phylogeography has provided a new approach to the analysis of the postglacial history of a wide range of taxa but, to date, little is known about the effect of glacial periods on the marine biota of Europe. We have utilized a combination of nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial genetic markers to study the biogeographic history of the red seaweed Palmaria palmata in the North Atlantic.
