Toward a Political Theory of the Sublime
2018
In this chapter, the author develops a topic undertheorized in Bourdieu’s work: physical violence. He presents the key points of an esthetic theory of the sublime and develops an alternative theory of the sublime, which draws on structural constructivism and Taoist political theory. In contrast to an esthetic theory of the sublime that automatically attributes to exceptional and violent physical actions ontological superiority and performative efficiency compared to the ‘weak’ routines of the ontic Lebenswelt, in a structural constructivist theory the key to the sublime as a defining moment of politics can be found in the links between physical events and symbolic structures. According to t…
Economic analysis and energy valorisation of by-products of the wine supply chain: the case of the 'Mamertino wine PDO'
2018
The paper reports the analysis of biomass derived from maintenance of a vineyard, to assess its potential as an alternative energy source, instead of the usual disposal of the wine supply chainâs residuals. The site studied is within the province of Messina, Sicily, in the area of Mamertino wine PDO, a wine of superior quality. The analysis suggests that use of this kind of biomass may allow a fossil fuel such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to be replaced by a wine wood chip biomass boiler, thus meeting economic and environmental criteria by reason of recycling for sustainability.
Lauroside B, a Megastigmane Glycoside from Laurus Nobilis (Bay Laurel) Leaves, Induces Apoptosis in Human Melanoma Cell Lines by Inhibiting NF-κB Act…
2010
Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive tumor that frequently resists chemotherapy, so the search for new agents for its treatment is of great importance. In the present study, the antiproliferative propensity against human melanoma cell lines of lauroside B (1), a megastigmane glycoside isolated from Laurus nobilis (bay laurel) leaves, was investigated. This compound suppressed the proliferation of three human melanoma cell lines, namely, A375, WM115, and SK-Mel-28. The 1-induced inhibition of human melanoma cell proliferation was due to the induction of apoptosis, as demonstrated by FACS analysis with annexin V/PI staining and confirmed by activation of caspase-3 and by the cleavage of …
Drimane Sesquiterpenoids from Marasmius sp. Inhibiting the Conidial Germination of Plant-Pathogenic Fungi
2012
From the basidiomycete Marasmius sp., strain IBWF 96046, three new sesquiterpenoids based on the drimane skeleton were isolated and named marasmene B and marasmals B and C. In this study, their isolation, structure elucidation, and biological evaluation are described. The compounds have a pronounced inhibitory effect on the conidial germination of several plant-pathogenic fungi.
Predicting the Significance of Necessity
2019
With Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), a necessity effect is estimated by calculating the amount of empty space in the upper-left corner in a plot with a predictor X and an outcome Y, and recently a method for testing the statistical significance of the necessity effect through permutation has been proposed. In the present simulation study, this method was found to give significant results already with a very weak true population necessity effect, i.e., exhibit high power, unless the sample size is very small. However, in some situations the significance of the necessity effect tends to increase with increased degree of sufficiency, which is paradoxical for a method whose objective is to …
More Than Meets the Eye: Toward a Post-Materialist Model of Consciousness.
2015
Commonly accepted models of human consciousness have substantial shortcomings, in the sense that they cannot account for the entire scope of human experiences. The goal of this article is to describe a model with higher explanatory power, by integrating ideas from psychology and quantum mechanics. In the first part, the need for a paradigm change will be justified by presenting three types of phenomena that challenge the materialistic view of consciousness. The second part is about proposing an alternative view of reality and mind–matter manifestation that is able to accommodate these phenomena. Finally, the ideas from the previous parts will be combined with the psychological concepts deve…
Du potentiel sémantique au signifié dialogique. Refléxions sur la construction énonciative du sens
2012
Introduction to Part IV
2018
When looking at the early development of relativity theory, one finds an astonishing number of contributions by mathematicians, some of which deeply influenced the work of leading theoretical physicists. Within the context of special relativity, Hermann Minkowski’s writings come immediately to mind (Walter 2008). Klein and Hilbert followed Minkowski’s ideas from their infancy, and both pursued some of their consequences after the latter’s premature death in January 1909. Two other figures with close ties to Gottingen, Max Born and Arnold Sommerfeld, were both instrumental in elaborating Minkowski’s 4-dimensional approach for physicists (Walter 2007). Born had been Minkowski’s assistant for …
Homozygous familial hypobetalipoproteinemia: two novel mutations in the splicing sites of apolipoprotein B gene and review of the literature.
2015
Objective: Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) is autosomal codominant disorder of lipoprotein metabolism characterized by low plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoproteincholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) below the 5 th percentile of the distribution in the population. Patients with the clinical diagnosis of homozygous FHBL (Ho-FHBL) are extremely rare and few patients have been characterized at the molecular level. Here we report the medical history and the molecular characterization of one paediatric patient with clinical features of Ho-FHBL. Methods: A one month old infant with failure to thrive, severe hypocholesterolemia and acanthocytosis was clin…
Overcoming managers’ myopic decisions in a waste collection company
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how the changing interrelationships between fleet management, human resources and outsourcer capacity areas are likely to counterbalance managerial policies, thereby generating a performance decay. The use of system dynamics modelling in a waste collection company offered an effective contribution to support decision makers to overcoming myopic decisions. Design/methodology/approach Literature review and a case study analysis (including interviews with company actors and data gathering) offered the basis to build a system dynamics model. The model built was then used to run simulations sessions to assess alternative investments decisions. Findin…
