Digital Platforms for Restructuring the Public Sector
2018
Many technological innovations have led to the emergence of the platform economy in recent years. This development is changing the entire landscape of business in the era of digitalisation. However, the impacts of the platform economy on public services and government are not well known. In this article we study the potential for the digital platform economy to help restructure the public sector. Firstly, central features of the new platform technology are explored, pointing to an algorithmic revolution, big data and cloud computing. Platforms are used in coordinating market transactions in an extremely efficient way. In order to apply the platform-concept to the public sector, an experimen…
Carsharing business models in Germany: characteristics, success and future prospects
2017
Carsharing provides an alternative to private car ownership by allowing car use temporarily on an on-demand basis. Operators provide carsharing services using different business models and ownership structures. We distinguish between cooperative, business-to-consumer (B2C) roundtrip and one-way, as well as peer-topeer (P2P) carsharing. This paper characterizes these different types of business models and compares their success in terms of diffusion using a comprehensive database of all 101 German carsharing providers in 2016. The key result holds that fleet size is significantly different across business models ranging from a few cars (cooperatives in small towns), to a few hundred (B2C rou…
Vaakakupissa vaarat ja vastuu: Julkisen palvelun median arvot sosiaalisen median alustojen paineessa
2021
2021
Effectuation Logic in Digital Business Model Transformation : Insights from Japanese High-Tech Innovators
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how digital business models evolve when entrepreneurs move to new digital platforms and how this evolution is related to effectuation and causation logics. Value Creation and Power Asymmetries in Digital Ecosystems : A Study of a Cloud Gaming Provider
2020
Digital platforms connecting users and service providers have a central role in determining the value creation structure of ecosystems. Platform developers try to achieve a dominant position for the platform with a strong ecosystem around it. The size and attractiveness of the services can attract new users, and growing user volume can bring new co-operative service providers to the service partner network. An interesting question is how the presence of power and potential power asymmetry affect the value creation capability and the structure of a network around a platform? This chapter describes an example of value creation and the influence of power asymmetry in a digital ecosystem built …
Why Is Your Crowd Abandoning You? : Exploring Crowdsourcing Discontinuance through the Lens of Motivation Theory
2019
A typical crowdsourcing platform connects organisations in need for workforce to individuals willing to work for a compensation. Considering that a motivated crowd constitutes a vital resource of such platforms, nurturing it becomes a crucial managerial consideration. Yet, little is known of why individual workers abandon crowdsourcing platforms after long periods of usage. Therefore, we set out to explore how crowd-workers’ motivations change during a platform’s usage lifecycle, from initial usage, to continued use, to its eventual abandonment. To this end, we conducted an in-depth qualitative inquiry into a popular crowdsourcing platform in the software-testing domain. Leveraging self-det…
The Design Towards a Collaborative Subscription Service : The Case of The Finnish Newspaper Industry
2020
The newspaper industry is challenged with its business models. To stabilize revenues, publishers opted for digital subscriptions for generating additional revenue streams. However, digital subscriptions showcase limited success. News aggregator platforms may promise publishers a pool of paying readers. But platform fees and the loss of customer relationships enact barriers among publishers to join. This study proposes a software prototype based on design science research to address the aforementioned shortcomings by deriving design principles for a collaborative subscription service. Building on the strategic alliance, digital platform and business model literature, this research aims to id…
UML Artefacts for a Blockchain-enabled Platform for Fairtrade
2021
Fairtrade-certified products have successfully entered the mainstream distribution channels mostly in developed countries, and these products are now sold in famous supermarket chains. Nonetheless, the packaging and labeling of products as “Fairtrade” commands premium pricing in the marketplace. How much of this, however, is valid and justified? Despite the reputable certification mechanisms for quality assurance, mass media reports suggest that much of the “surplus value” goes to the accreditation agencies themselves instead of the producers. This article proposes an agenda to set this right with a blockchain platform that provides “trust-free” assurances of verifiable labeling. Using an A…
