This article addresses the silent reading of music notation, combining eye-movement measures with a semantic analysis of readers’ verbal descriptions of the notated music. A group of musical novices ( n = 16) and two groups of musical amateurs (less experienced n = 11 and more experienced n = 10) participated in three separate measurement sessions during a nine-month-long university music course designed for future primary-school teachers. Some months ago, I took part, with some friends, in an astronomy trip to the mountain Pico del Buitre, in Javalambre (province of Teruel, Spain). The trip, among whose participants there were prospective scientists between the age of four and nine, included a night devoted to amateur observation with portable telescopes. El Pico del Buitre is one of the darkest spots in Spain—and also one of the coldest, as all members of the party remember well. Even darker is Roque de los Muchachos, on Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands), one of the most important sites for astronomy observation on the Northern hemisphere.

Franco’s dictatorship was characterized by an official narrative that criminalized the liberal tradition of previous periods. Such a discourse defined an ideologically correct science that censured the subordination of Spanish science to foreign influence and sought to create a new scientific tradition. However, recent studies have revised these aims and suggest that there was a continuity of scientific and technological programmes and practices before and after the Spanish Civil War. Sampling bias is an issue for research involving cyclists. The heterogeneity of cyclist populations, on the basis of skill level and riding purpose, can generate incorrect inferences about one specific segment of the population of interest. In addition, a more accurate categorization would be helpful when physiological parameters are not available. This study proposes using self-reported data to categorize amateur cyclist types by varying skill levels and riding purposes, therefore improving sample selection in experimental studies. The Influence of Parents on Achievement Orientation and Motivation for Sport of Adolescent Athletes with and without Disabilities

The purpose was three-fold. First, to analyze the psychometric properties of scales used. Second, to test the relationship among athletes’ perceptions of parents’ goal orientation and their own goal orientation and intrinsic motivation. Third, to compare athletes with and without disabilities with respect to the influence of parents on athletes’ achievement orientation and motivation for sport. Participants were 173 amateur athletes (80 with disabilities, 93 without disabilities).
