Quantitative colorimetric analysis of some inorganic salts using digital photography

An analytical imaging approach to the quantitation of dissolved chemical species absorbed in the visible spectral region is reported. The approach uses digital images of a series of standard solutions of the target substance and their processing with appropriate software to assign a numeric value to each standard in terms of color intensity. Such a value is directly proportional to the analyte concentration and allows the construction of a calibration graph. The results thus obtained are compared with those provided by the classical spectrophotometricmethod used to run calibration curves for colored substances. Multiplexed plasmon sensor for rapid label-free analyte detection.

Efficient and cost-effective multiplexed detection schemes for proteins in small liquid samples would bring drastic advances to fields like disease detection or water quality monitoring. We present a novel multiplexed sensor with randomly deposited aptamer functionalized gold nanorods. The spectral position of plasmon resonances of individual nanorods, monitored by dark-field spectroscopy, respond specifically to different proteins. We demonstrate nanomolar sensitivity, sensor recycling, and the potential to upscale to hundreds or thousands of targets.

In this article we will analyse, from a transnational history point of view, the presence of American anarchism in the Galician libertarian press until 1936. In the 19th and 20h centuries, the transatlantic migrations contributed to develop a dense network of contacts and relationships between Galicia and American countries. This network involves anarchist militants on both sides of the Ocean. The Galician anarchists have a close collaboration with her Americans libertarian comrades; and many Galician militants are actively committed in the labour movement of their host countries. Thirty-one South American sea lion pups (Otaria flavescens) found dead in Punta León, Argentina, during the summer of 2002, were examined for hookworms (Uncinaria hamiltoni). Parasite parameters were analyzed in 2 locations of the rookery, i.e., a traditional, well-structured breeding area and an expanding area with juveniles and a lax social structure. Prevalence of hookworms was 50% in both localities, and no difference was observed in prevalence between pup sexes (P > 0.05). Hookworms were concentrated in the small intestine. Hookworms produce a vast repertoire of structurally and functionally diverse molecules that mediate their long-term survival and pathogenesis within a human host. Many of these molecules are secreted by the parasite, after which they interact with critical components of host biology, including processes that are key to host survival. The most important of these interactions is the hookworm's interruption of nutrient acquisition by the host through its ingestion and digestion of host blood. Selective depletion of alloreactive T cells from stem-cell allografts should abrogate graft-versus-host disease while preserving beneficial T cell specificities to facilitate engraftment and immune reconstitution. Mycoplasma arthritidis produces an as yet undefined soluble molecule (MAS) that has a potent mitogenic effect on T cells of several species. We have used cloned human cytotoxic and proliferative T lymphocytes to dissect the molecular mechanism of T cell activation by this mitogen. Reactivity to MAS is clonally expressed among T cell receptor (TcR) alpha/beta chain-expressing T cell clones of CD4+ or CD8+ phenotype, as well as CD4-8- TcR alpha/beta chain-negative T lymphocyte clones expressing the CD3-associated TcR gamma chain.
