Deletion of organic cation transporter Oct3 promotes hepatic fibrosis via upregulation of TGFβ

2019

Organic cation transporters (OCT) are responsible for the intracellular uptake and detoxification of a broad spectrum of endogenous and exogenous substrates. OCTs are downregulated in cholestasis, fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, but the underlying molecular mechanisms and downstream effects of OCT deletion are unknown. Oct3-knockout ( Oct3−/−; FVB.Slc22a3tm10pb) and wild-type (WT; FVB) mice were subject to escalating doses of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) or thioacetamide (TAA) for 6 wk to induce advanced parenchymal liver fibrosis. Secondary biliary fibrosis was generated by bile duct ligation. Liver fibrosis was assessed by hydroxyproline determination, quantitative Sirius red morp…

Does glatiramer acetate provoke hepatitis in multiple sclerosis?

2012

Abstract An association between multiple sclerosis and autoimmune hepatitis has been described. The latter can also be unmasked or exacerbated by a variety of therapies used in multiple sclerosis, such as beta-Interferon or glatiramer acetate. Two cases of hepatitis occurring after exposure to glatiramer acetate are described here: the first, was possibly due to autoimmune hepatitis, rather than glatiramer acetate induced liver injury, the second was definite autoimmune hepatitis. Both occurred in patients who had already experienced hepatitis exacerbations during previous beta-Interferon treatment. We suggest that glatiramer acetate can unmask hepatitis. Thus, liver enzyme monitoring shoul…

Determinantes de la divulgación de información sobre sostenibilidad en los gobiernos locales de Latinoamérica

2022

This paper analyses the socioeconomic factors that influence the disclosure of sustainability information on 99 local government websites in 2018 in countries that make up the Pacific Alliance (PA) in Latin America, associated with internal and external demands that public entities have for accountability in social and environmental issues. We use as methodology a content analysis of the sustainability information disclosed by local entities on their websites and a regression of Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). This article shows empirical evidence that the size, budget capacity and the economic level of the municipality are factors associated with the sustainability disclosure on websites due…

PARA UNA PERIODIZACION DE LA MINIFICCION PERUANA: UN NUEVO DESAFIO DE LA CRITICA EN EL PERU

2019

Studies on mini-fiction started during the 1980s. Today this literary genre, previously seen as a literary exception or amusement, has enthusiasts, theorists, practitioners, and thousands of pages dedicated to its analysis. This article examines the current state of Latin American, and Peruvian in particular, mini-fiction and compares three theoretical studies about mini-fiction in Peru by three young Peruvian researchers – Rony Vásquez, Elton Honores and Oscar Gallegos – who propose a periodization of the national mini-fiction which confirms how in the present Peruvian mini-fiction is alive, at a theoretical and pragmatic level.

Trade Openness and Income: A Tale of Two Regions

2015

In this article we present evidence of the long-run effect of trade openness on income per worker for two regions that have followed different liberalization strategies, namely Asia and Latin America. A model that re-examines these questions is estimated for two panels of Asian and Latin American countries over the 1980-2008 period using a novel empirical approach that accounts for endogeneity as well as for the time series properties of the variables involved. From an econometric point of view, we apply recent panel cointegration techniques based on factor models that account for two additional elements usually neglected in previous empirical literature: cross-dependence and structural bre…

Has 1997 Asian crisis increased information flows between international markets

2003

Abstract The Asian crisis started on July 2, 1997 and caused turmoil in developed as well as emerging international stock markets. The objective of this paper is to analyse the effects of the crisis on the relationships of the Southeast Asian stock markets with the stock markets of three geographical areas (Europe, North America, and Latin America). We use the Morgan Stanley national and international indexes (MSCI) for two homogeneous and nonoverlapping time intervals. The econometric techniques used in this paper include the cointegration test, vector autoregression analysis, forecast error variance decomposition (FEVD), and impulse–response relationships. Our results show that: (i) there…

Product and process innovation and total factor productivity: Evidence for manufacturing in four Latin American countries

2017

The literature on firm productivity recognizes the important role played by firm innovation activities on firm productivity in developed countries. However, the literature for developing and emerging economies is scarce and far from conclusive. The aim of this paper is to study the innovation–productivity link (distinguishing between process and product innovations) for manufacturing at the firm level for four Latin American countries (two classified as upper-middle income countries by the World Bank—Argentina and Mexico—and two as lower-middle income—Colombia and Peru). We aim testing whether the level of development is a mediating factor in the innovation–productivity link. The data used …
