Mealtime versus nighttime acid inhibition

This study was carried out in order to compare the effects of mealtime and bedtime regimens of ranitidine on gastric acidity. Fifteen duodenal ulcer patients in clinical remission were randomized to receive in single-blind fashion either placebo, ranitidine 300 mg at night (2200 hr) or ranitidine 150 mg three times a day given before each of the three daily meals (1800, 0800 and 1200 hr). Over 24 hr, the two active treatments produced a significantly greater acid inhibition than placebo, while the single daily regimen was superior to the three times a day regimen of ranitidine in terms of both rise in pH values (P less than 0.001) and duration of action expressed as time spent above 3.0 pH …

These data were compared with striatal receptor occupancy values after single-dose ziprasidone ingestion in healthy controls. Norepinephrine transporter gene polymorphism is not associated with susceptibility to alcohol dependence

Abnormalities in monoamine neurotransmission have been implicated in the pathogenesis of alcoholism, mood disorders and schizophrenia. Murine norepinephrine transporter gene (NET) has been mapped to a region on chromosome 8 where a quantitative trait locus for ethanol sensitivity. Therefore we tested whether norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene variants confer susceptibility to either alcohol dependence or severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Evidence for the importance of the human dopamine transporter gene for withdrawal symptomatology of alcoholics in a German population

Two new polymorphisms in the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of the dopamine transporter (DAT1) gene, adjacent to the known variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism, have been investigated in the present population-based association study including 351 alcoholics and 336 controls. The DraI restriction site was not polymorphic in our population. The G2319A polymorphism was not significantly different with respect to genotype or allele distribution between alcoholics and controls. Dopamine D4 receptor exon III polymorphism, adverse life events and personality traits in a nonclinical German adult sample.

Personality and temperament embrace a wide area of both psychological and behavioral processes which are also based on disposition. A functional polymorphism in exon III of the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) has been a highly suspect genetic marker for personality in spite of ambiguous results. The present study aimed to further elucidate the relationship between DRD4, negative life events and personality in a representative nonclinical sample. Hundred sixty-seven Germans completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire and the California Adult Q-Sort. Plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide and hemodynamic function in cardiac disease.

Plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide were measured in eight patients with cardiac disease but normal resting right atrial pressure, during cardiac catheterization. No patient had clinical evidence of overt heart failure. An increase in peptide concentrations was observed between the aorta or the peripheral vein and the pulmonary artery. A linear relation was found between peripheral vein and pulmonary artery peptide concentration. Mean pulmonary artery and capillary wedge pressure also correlated with the peptide levels. Itch is the most bothersome symptom in psoriasis, often leading to impaired quality of life. Treatment of psoriasis-induced itch is frequently unsatisfactory as the various therapies employed have a delayed onset of effect. To study the potential role of sympathetic activity in the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and to analyze its relationship with 24-hour blood pressure pattern, plasma catecholamines and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring were evaluated in 30 ADPKD hypertensive patients (of which 17 without and 13 with renal failure) and in 50 essential hypertensives. Increased expression of markers of early atherosclerosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Recent studies documented an increased cardiovascular risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Deferiprone versus Deferoxamine in Sickle Cell Disease: Results from a 5-year long-term Italian multi-center randomized clinical trial

Blood transfusion and iron chelation currently represent a supportive therapy to manage anemia, vasculopathy and vaso-occlusion crises in Sickle-Cell-Disease. Here we describe the first 5-year long-term randomized clinical trial comparing Deferiprone versus Deferoxamine in patients with Sickle-Cell-Disease. The results of this study show that Deferiprone has the same effectiveness as Deferoxamine in decreasing body iron burden, measured as repeated measurements of serum ferritin concentrations on the same patient over 5-years and analyzed according to the linear mixed-effects model (LMM) (p=0.822).
