Potencialidades de Google Maps en la investigación social aplicada

2019

In recent years, Google has devoted resources to build a complete map of the world. They constantly scan the territory, collecting a large amount of data that provides updated and complete geographic information. This allows us to have an interoperable map that provides the end user with a search tool, not only of routes but also of shops, equipment and any type of geo-referenced information. In addition, Google Maps provides a series of Application Programming Interface (API), which provides a library of set of subroutines, functions and procedures (in object-oriented programming) that can be used by other software to automate the extraction of information of the Google platform. Epistemic cooperation scripts in online learning environments: Fostering learning by reducing uncertainty in discourse?

2005

Using online learning environments in higher education offers innovative possibilities to support collaborative learning. However, online learning creates new kinds of problems for participants who have not previously worked with each other. One of these problems is uncertainty which occurs when participants do not know each other. According to the uncertainty reduction theory, low uncertainty level increases the amount of discourse and decreases the amount of information seeking. Therefore, uncertainty may influence online discourse and learning. This study investigates the effects of an epistemic cooperation script with respect to the amount of discourse, information seeking and learning …

La vocalidad del violín en el norte de Italia en torno a 1600

2021

Throughout the present research I intend to demonstrate the powerful link between the vocal practice in accompanied monody and the way Early Italian violin music ought to be interpreted. Due to the scarce amount of articulation and ornamentation in this music, I consider that historical criteria should be found in order to back up the subjective choices in its performance. According to this, I focus on reviewing sources that describe the vocal practice around 1600, but also contemporary sources in which we can find instructions addressed to bow instruments. Besides, a catalogue of articulations and ornamentations present in early editions of printed violin music is attached. Last, I comment…

Pensions, Economic Growth and Welfare in Advanced Economies

2020

In this chapter, we analyse the effects of PAYG and funded pension systems on welfare. The debate on the choice between alternative systems focuses on their effects on savings, capital accumulation, labour supply, economic growth and inequality and the potential benefits of mixed systems in which a PAYG system with notional accounts is complemented by a funded pensions system. The main findings are as follows. Firstly, the redistribution of income among individuals makes the PAYG system an important part of any mixed system. Secondly, the design of the pension system should efficiently balance incentives and distortions with equality and insurance against individual idiosyncratic risks. Thi…

Global distributions of diazotrophs Gamma-A nifH genes abundance - Depth integrated values computed from a collection of source datasets - Contributi…

2013

The MAREDAT atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria to jellyfish. Together, these plankton groups determine the health and productivity of the global ocean and play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Working within a uniform and consistent spatial and depth grid (map) of the global ocean, the researchers compiled thousands and tens of thousands of data points to identify regions of plankton abundance and scarcity as well as areas of data abundance and scarcity. At many of the grid points, the MAREDAT team accomplished the difficult conversion from abundance (numbers of organisms) to biomass (carbon mass of organisms). The MAREDAT atlas provides an unprecedente…

The effect of meal size on the rate of gastric evacuation of burbot, Lota lota (L.)

1999

– The effect of meal size on the gastric evacuation rate of burbot Lota lota (L.), was determined at a constant temperature of 1.5°C. Burbot were fed vendace Coregonus albula (L.), in varying amounts from 1.0% to 12.6% of burbot weight. Although gastric evacuation rate decreased exponentially with increasing meal size, the absolute amount of food evacuated per day (g. day−1 increased when meal size increased. The estimated maximum daily gastric evacuation rates were 0.8, 1.3 and 1.6 g/day with meal sizes 1%, 5% and 10% of burbot weight (200 g). No difference in gastric evacuation rate was observed between meals of the same size (8 g) but which consisted of either one or three vendace.

Statistical features and perceived similarity of folk melodies

2001

Listeners are sensitive to pitch distributional information in music (N. Oram & L. L. Cuddy, 1995; C. L. Krumhansl, J. Louhivuori, P.Toiviainen, T. Järvinen, & T. Eerola, 1999). However, it is uncertain whether frequency-based musical features are sufficient to explain the similarity judgments that underlie listeners' classification processes. A similarity rating experiment was designed to determine the effectiveness of these features in predicting listeners' similarity ratings. The material consisted of 15 melodies representing five folk music styles. A multiple regression analysis showed that the similarity of frequency-based musical properties could account for a moderate amount …

Domain Structures in Langmuir-Blodgett Films Investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy

1993

Investigations of phase-separated Langmuir-Blodgett films by atomic force microscopy reveal that on a scale of 30 to 200 micrometers, these images resemble those observed by fluorescence microscopy. Fine structures (less than 1 micrometer) within the stearic acid domains were observed, which cannot be seen by conventional optical microscopic techniques. By applying the force modulation technique, it was found that the elastic properties of the domains in the liquid condensed phase and grains observed within the liquid expanded phase were comparable. Small soft residues in the domains could also be detected. The influence of trace amounts of a fluorescence dye on the micromorphology of monol…

Trace element analysis in pre-solar stardust grains via full-field imaging XPS (Nano-ESCA)

2006

An acid-resistant, SiC-rich, residue from the Murchison meteorite was investigated by means of a novel imaging XPS instrument. The micrometer-sized grains were deposited on a Si wafer from an aqueous suspension. Energy filtered ESCA images have been taken in the kinetic energy range from the threshold up to about 400 eV for various photon energies. A lateral resolution of the order of 120 nm along with a high energy resolution in the range of 100 meV provides the basis for chemical trace element analysis with maximum sensitivity. Apart from major (Si, C) and minor (N, Mg, Al, Fe) elements, the energy filtered images and local microspectra revealed the presence of a variety of heavy trace el…
