NEOTECTONIC ACTIVITY AND EMISSION OF FLUIDS IN THE NORTHWEST SICILY CHANNEL

The southern Sicilian coast represents an important contribution to Italian tourism, the Sicily Channel is an important communication path because at the top of its seafloor there are many pipelines, and submarine communication cables which are laid to carry signals, and which are very important to the minor islands. In this work, we are presenting results of the detailed geomorphological and seismostratigraphic analysis based on new very high-resolution dataset (multibeam and CHIRP) acquired during the ACUSCAL 2015 Cruise. We also used low resolution bathymetric and seismic data provided from online database (ViDEPI, GEBCO, EMODnet). This study allows us to reconstruct the tectonic volcani…

Molecular Biomineralization: Toward an Understanding of the Biogenic Origin of Polymetallic Nodules, Seamount Crusts, and Hydrothermal Vents

2011

Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of …

A Social Insurance Accounting for a Notional Defined Contribution Scheme Combining Retirement and Long-Term Care Benefits

2018

This paper develops a social insurance accounting model for a notional defined contribution (NDC) scheme combining retirement and long-term care (LTC) contingencies. The procedure relies on standard double-entry bookkeeping and enables us to compile a “Swedish” type actuarial balance sheet (ABS) following a framework equivalent to an open group approach. This methodology is suitable for reporting the system’s solvency status and can show periodical changes in the system’s financial position by means of an income statement. The information underpinning the actuarial valuation is based on events and transactions that are verifiable at the valuation date, without considering expected future tr…

Integrating Retirement and Long-Term Care (LTC) Annuities Using a Notional Defined Contribution (NDC) Framework

2014

This paper examines the possibility of embedding public long-term care (LTC) insurance within the retirement pension system, i.e. introducing life care annuities (LCAs) into a notional defined contribution (NDC) framework. To do this we develop a multistate overlapping generations model (MOLG) that includes the so-called survivor dividend and give special attention to the assumptions made about mortality rates for dependent persons and LTC incidence rates, which largely determine the contribution rate assigned to LTC. The proposed model could be of interest to policymakers because it could be implemented without too much difficulty, it would universalize LTC coverage with a "fixed" cost, an…

Is the Reform of the Spanish Public Pension System of 2011 Justified from an Actuarial Point of View?

2012

The aim of this paper is basically to answer three questions about the Spanish public retirement pension system. Is the 2011 reform of the system, which will gradually come into force starting on 1-01-2013, justified from an actuarial point of view? What measures would have been adopted in the Spanish system if all the accounting principles applied in the notional account pension system in Sweden were enforced? What measures would be adopted if current legislation on defined benefit private pension plans were applied to the system? To this end we formulate a Swedish-type actuarial balance for the Spanish public retirement pension system as at 31-12-2010 and project a solvency indicator for …

Notional defined contributions (NDC): Solvency and risk in Spain

2007

The aim of this article is twofold: to demonstrate the actuarial imbalance in the Spanish pension system in its current form; and to measure the degree of aggregate economic risk to which pensioners are exposed when applying formulas for the calculation of retirement pensions based on notional accounts. The model used generates scenarios for various periods encompassing some 10,000 different permutations of the macroeconomic indices needed to calculate such parameters as initial pension, earnings replacement rate, or internal rate of return and value at risk. The findings are analysed both objectively and subjectively. The main conclusions are that if the projections for the macroeconomic i…

Incorporation of trace metals Cu, Zn, and Cd into gypsum: Implication on their mobility and fate in natural and anthropogenic environments

2020

Abstract The coexistence of calcium (Ca2+), sulfate (SO42−) with trace metal cations (M(II)) can possibly lead to M(II)-gypsum coprecipitation and solid solution formation. However, gypsum's role in the fixation of M(II) is still largely unknown. This study investigated the precipitation of Ca2+ and SO42− in the presence of M(II) (i.e., Cu2+, Zn2+, or Cd2+) and the incorporation of the metal cations into the gypsum structure at different environmental conditions. Trace metals in two natural gypsum samples (Yunnan and Neimeng, China) and one hydrometallurgical byproduct gypsum sample from a Cu refinery were also assessed. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ra…

Development of accurate mass spectrometric routine and reference methods for the determination of trace amounts of iridium and rhodium in photographi…

1999

For the determination of trace amounts of iridium and rhodium in photographic emulsions different sample treatment procedures were coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and, for iridium, also with negative thermal ionisation isotope dilution mass spectrometry (NTI-IDMS) and ICP-IDMS. IDMS determinations of iridium were carried out using an enriched 191Ir spike solution. Elimination of the silver matrix was established for both mass spectrometric methods, which prevents corresponding memory effects in the ICP-MS system and is essential for the formation of IrO2 - thermal ions, respectively. For NTI-MS measurements, the gelatine matrix of the emulsion must also be…

Magmatism Along Lateral Slab Edges: Insights From the Diamante-Enotrio-Ovidio Volcanic-Intrusive Complex (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

2019

Volcanic‐intrusive complexes often formed along lateral slab edges as a consequence of subduction‐induced mantle flow. We investigate this process in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea by integrating multibeam bathymetry, seismic‐reflection data, regional magnetic anomalies data, and seismological data. The interpretation of the data highlights the presence of magmatic intrusions that locally reach the seafloor forming volcanic edifices. Chimneys, lava flows, and laccoliths are observed beneath and surrounding the volcanoes. The emplacement and cooling of the magma occurred during the Brunhes Chron. The volcanoes are not active even if the hydrothermal activity occurs. The volcanic‐intrusive compl…
