Molecular association of small amphiphiles: Origin of ionic liquid properties in dibutyl phosphate/propylamine binary mixtures

2018

Abstract Binary mixtures of liquid surfactants, owing to the amphiphilic nature of the molecules involved, can exhibit nano-segregation and peculiar transport properties. The amphiphilicity, and consequently the resulting self-assembly, can be tuned by changing the length of the alkyl chains and the nature of the polar head group. So, in the present study, the structural and dynamic properties of dibutyl phosphate/propylamine liquid mixtures at various compositions have been investigated by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), FT-IR, rheometry and dielectric spectroscopy in order to study the intermolecular association taking place when alkylphosphates and alkylamines with a small apolar par…

Dissolution of nitrones in alkylphosphates: A structural study

2022

Nitrones are chemical compounds with well-established anti-oxidant and spin-trapping properties. Their low solubility in water for many of them limits their applications, so opportune solvents must be found. In this study, two recently synthetized oxindole nitrones with proven antiproliferative and antioxidant activity have been dissolved in several liquid amphiphiles, chosen as model solvents. The effect of the polar head nature and the alkyl chain length/type have been investigated by a combined experimental (solubility, UV–vis spectroscopy) / computational (molecular dynamics) approach. The different chemical structures of the various solvents offer different chemical environments to the…

Interfacial Self-Assembly to Spatially Organize Graphene Oxide Into Hierarchical and Bioactive Structures

2020

Multicomponent self-assembly holds great promise for the generation of complex and functional biomaterials with hierarchical microstructure. Here, we describe the use of supramolecular co-assembly between an elastin-like recombinamer (ELR5) and a peptide amphiphile (PA) to organize graphene oxide (GO) flakes into bioactive structures across multiple scales. The process takes advantage of a reaction—diffusion mechanism to enable the incorporation and spatial organization of GO within multiple ELR5/PA layers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ImageJ software were used to demonstrate the hierarchical organization of GO flakes within the ELR5/PA lay…

Steric Constraints Induced Frustrated Growth of Supramolecular Nanorods in Water.

2015

A unique example of supramolecular polymerisation in water based on monomers with nanomolar affinities, which yield rod-like materials with extraordinarily high thermodynamic stability, yet of finite length, is reported. A small library of charge-neutral dendritic peptide amphiphiles was prepared, with a branched nonaphenylalanine-based core that was conjugated to hydrophilic dendrons of variable steric demand. Below a critical size of the dendron, the monomers assemble into nanorod-like polymers, whereas for larger dendritic side chains frustrated growth into near isotropic particles is observed. The supramolecular morphologies observed by electron microscopy, X-ray scattering and diffusio…

Amphiphilic Polyphenylene Dendron Conjugates for Surface Remodeling of Adenovirus 5

2020

Abstract Amphiphilic surface groups play an important role in many biological processes. The synthesis of amphiphilic polyphenylene dendrimer branches (dendrons), providing alternating hydrophilic and lipophilic surface groups and one reactive ethynyl group at the core is reported. The amphiphilic surface groups serve as biorecognition units that bind to the surface of adenovirus 5 (Ad5), which is a common vector in gene therapy. The Ad5/dendron complexes showed high gene transduction efficiencies in coxsackie‐adenovirus receptor (CAR)‐negative cells. Moreover, the dendrons offer incorporation of new functions at the dendron core by in situ post‐modifications, even when bound to the Ad5 sur…
