Analysis of lipids in pelagic fish of Sicilian Channel and use of fatty acids as bacterial contamination markers

Lipids provide the expendable form of energy in marine ecosystem, and have an important role for the reproductive biology of fish. Also, lipids are important nutrients, versatile markers for marine trophic studies, bacteria markers etc. Among the lipids, several essential fatty acids are determinants for ecosystem health as well as for their known nutritional properties and prevention capacity of chronic diseases. Vitamin D3 in fish oil extracted with limonene from anchovy leftovers

Abstract Aiming to identify and assess the amount of fat-soluble vitamins in anchovy oil extracted with d-limonene from anchovy fillet leftovers via the UHPLC–HESI–MS advanced mass spectrometry analytical technique, this study shows that only vitamin D3 is present in anchovy by-product oil. The sum of the quantities of the three isomers of vitamin D3 amounts to 0.0815 μg vitamin D3 per g oil, namely a 81.5 μg/kg content, in good agreement with the typical amounts of vitamin D3 in fish oils (ranging from 18 to 350 μg/kg).

Seascape connectivity of European anchovy in the Central Mediterranean Sea revealed by weighted Lagrangian backtracking and bio-energetic modelling

AbstractEcological connectivity is one of the most important processes that shape marine populations and ecosystems, determining their distribution, persistence, and productivity. Here we use the synergy of Lagrangian back-trajectories, otolith-derived ages of larvae, and satellite-based chlorophyll-a to identify spawning areas of European anchovy from ichthyoplanktonic data, collected in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea), i.e., the crucial channel in between the European and African continents. AbstractSmall pelagic fishes in the Mediterranean Sea constitute about half of the total landings, of which almost one-third is European anchovy. Anchovy abundance mainly depends on early life stage and juvenile survival and growth, which are susceptible to shifts in environmental processes. Incorporating Biotic Information in Species Distribution Models: A Coregionalized Approach

In this work, we discuss the use of a methodological approach for modelling spatial relationships among species by means of a Bayesian spatial coregionalized model. Inference and prediction is performed using the integrated nested Laplace approximation methodology to reduce the computational burden. We illustrate the performance of the coregionalized model in species interaction scenarios using both simulated and real data. The simulation demonstrates the better predictive performance of the coregionalized model with respect to the univariate models.
