“From Savage to Sublime (And Partway Back): Indians and Antiquity in Early Nineteenth-Century American Literature”

This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. A new complete check-list of Birds of Sicily is presented in this paper, with a comparison with previous lists for a period of one hundred and fifty years. Further, an unknown manuscript by Joseph Whitaker “Birds of Sicily”, dated back to ca. 1920, has been transcribed and is here presented integrally. Thus, lists of birds here presented have been separated as follows: i) Doderlein (1869–1874); ii) Whitaker (1920); iii) Iapichino & Massa (1989), Lo Valvo et al. In 2007 the Estonian government began to relocate a highly contentious Soviet era war memorial from the centre of Tallinn to a nearby military cemetery. The ‘Bronze Soldier’ was erected in 1947 to honour the memory of the fallen Soviet soldiers who had fought in the battles that liberated Tallinn from German forces during the Second World War. At that time it was known as the ‘Monument to the Liberators of Tallinn’. An eternal flame was added in 1964. Following independence, Estonian authorities rededicated it to all soldiers who had died during the war and dismantled the eternal flame in an attempt to depoliticise the memorial. Iliada Homera jest wielowarstwową opowieścią o heroicznej przeszłości achajskiej arystokracji. Choć skażeni winą, ate, choć zaangażowani w niesprawiedliwą, łupieżczą wojnę, bohaterowie achajskiej historii dosięgają wzoru cnoty, arete – męstwa połączonego z mądrością. Wina zarówno Achajów – Achillesa i Agamemnona, jak i Trojan – Parysa i Hektora, przesłania oraz odbiera im część chwały, jaka winna wypływać z mądrego męstwa połączonego z szacunkiem dla zwyciężonych. Wina zrodzona z pokusy, której nie mogą się oprzeć jako śmiertelni, paradoksalnie obarcza ich odpowiedzialnością za zło, nad którym nie panują. Jednak spadająca na nich kara staje się ekspiacją i aktem odzyskania heroicznej cnoty.…
