The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. The ‘Homeric Greek Compounds Project’ is a linguistic research project partially funded by the University of Palermo FFR-2012-ATE-0164 (2013-2015). Abstract Background & Aims Ancient wheat varieties are considered to be healthier than modern ones, but the data are not univocal. We investigated changes in hematochemical parameters and evaluated microbiota data before and after a set period on a diet containing a whole-meal ancient wheat mix. The utility of 3D medical imaging techniques for obtaining a reliable differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer in an Iron Age skull.

Abstract In this report we present a case of neoplastic disease affecting an Iron Age skull that provides some of the earliest evidence of metastatic cancer (MC) in Western Europe. The cranium comes from the indigenous site of Baucina (Palermo, Sicily) and was recovered in a multiple burial context dated to the 6th–5th centuries BCE. The skull was attributed to an adult female and was characterized by numerous perforating lytic lesions. CT and 3D imaging analyses were crucial for obtaining a diagnosis of MC. Based on the morphology of the lytic lesions and the biological profile of our specimen, we can tentatively suggest breast carcinoma as the primary origin of the clinical manifestations…
