Refractory metal reactivity towards oxide surface : W/TiO2(1 1 0) case.

International audience; Reactivity of deposited tungsten towards TiO2(1 1 0) surface was studied using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (both core levels, valence band and resonant photoemission) on Materials Science Beamline at ELETTRA. W depositions carried out at room temperature on TiO2(1 1 0) surface give rise to an interfacial reaction which leads to a metastable situation due to kinetic limitations. Annealing induces chemical changes which are function of the initial coverage; for fractional coverage, annealing induces completion of oxidation of deposit whereas reduction to metallic tungsten occurs for highest coverage. In-situ small-angle x-ray scattering study of nanoparticles in the plasma plume induced by pulsed laser irradiation of metallic targets

Import JabRef; International audience; Small angle x-ray scattering was used to probe in-situ the formation of nanoparticles in the plasma plume generated by pulsed laser irradiation of a titanium metal surface under atmospheric conditions. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized as function of laser irradiance. Two families of nanoparticles were identified with sizes on the order of 10 and 70 nm, respectively. These results were confirmed by ex-situ transmission electron microscopy experiments.

Simplified Model for Compressive Behavior of Concrete Columns Strengthened by Steel Angles and Strips

This paper presents an analytical model to determine the compressive response of concrete members, having a square transverse cross section and reinforced with steel angles at the corners and steel strips connecting the steel angles. The model evaluates the effects of transverse strips and steel angles on confinement pressures, including strength and buckling phenomena. Compressive response was evaluated in cases of directly and indirectly loaded elements. The data produced correlate well with available experimental data.

Nonlocal effects in metal–dielectric (MD) periodic nanostructures may typically be observed when the plasmonic particles and gaps are on the scale of a few tens of nanometers, enabling under certain conditions (succinctly for epsilon near zero) a collimated beam to split into three refracted signals. We developed a method for precisely evaluating the categorized transmissivity in an air/trirefringent metamaterial interface, which uses a fast one-dimensional Fourier transform and finite element solvers of Maxwell’s equations. Pickering Emulsions of Fluorinated TiO2: A New Route for Intensification of Photocatalytic Degradation of Nitrobenzene

International audience; Fluorination of the TiO2 surface has been often reported as a tool to increase the photocatalytic efficiency due to the beneficial effects in terms of production of oxidizing radicals. Moreover, it is shown that the unique amphiphilic properties of the fluorinated TiO2 (TiO2-F) surface allow one to use this material as a stabilizer for the formulation of Pickering emulsions of poorly soluble pollutants such as nitrobenzene (NB) in water. The properties and function of supramolecular polymer networks are determined not only by pairwise interchain transient associations but also by chain entanglement and nanoscopic phase separation of the associative groups. To unravel the impact and interplay of these different factors, we devise a set of model supramolecular polymer networks in which the number of entanglements and the density of associative groups are systematically varied. The statistical anionic copolymerisation of the biobased monomer β-myrcene with styrene in cyclohexane was investigated via in situ near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, focusing on the influence of the modifiers (i.e., Lewis bases) tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 2,2-di(2-tetrahydrofuryl)propane (DTHFP) on the reactivity ratios. With increasing [modifier]/[Li] ratio, the reactivity ratios in the system myrcene/styrene are adjustable from rS ≪ rMyrvia rS ≈ rMyr to rS ≫ rMyr. The bidentate modifier DTHFP affects the reactivity ratios much more than THF: minute amounts only (0.35 equivalent relative to Li) are required to randomize the copolymer, and one equivalent to invert the reactivity ratios. Surface characterization of functional poly(diacetylene) and poly(butadiene) mono- and multilayers

The surface properties of Langmuir-Blodgett mono- and multilayers of a variety of amphiphilic poly(diacetylene)s and poly(butadiene)s were investigated by contact angle, streaming potentialζ, ellipsometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) measurements. Captive air and octane angles varied between approximately 60° and 105° for hydrophobicx-layers and 31° to 46° for hydrophilic surfaces depending on the particular head group, whereas advancing angles determined via the vertical plate method are considerably higher. Formation and Characterization of Self-Assembled Films of Thiol-Derivatized Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) on Gold

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) copolymers containing propanethiol side chain “stickers” for forming self-assembled films on gold surfaces have been studied by various experimental techniques including ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, FT-IR, angle-dependent XPS, and ToF−SIMS. The results show that the thiol-containing side chains do not all chemisorb to the gold surfaces. In addition, the concentration of these sticker units was found to have a dominant effect on the polymer film thickness, the surface wetting properties, and the orientation of the PDMS backbone.
