Angular variation of thermal infrared emissivity for some natural surfaces from experimental measurements

2008

Multiangle algorithms for estimating sea and land surface temperature with Along-Track Scanning Radiometer data require a precise knowledge of the angular variation of surface emissivity in the thermal infrared. Currently, few measurements of this variation exist. Here an experimental investigation of the angular variation of the infrared emissivity in the thermal infrared (8-14-microm) band of some representative samples was made at angles of 0 degrees-65 degrees (at 5 degrees increments) to the surface normal. The results show a decrease of the emissivity with increasing viewing angle, with water showing the highest angular dependence (approximately 7% from 0 degrees to 65 degrees views).…

Double Step Electrochemical Process for the Deposition of Superhydrophobic Coatings for Enhanced Corrosion Resistance

2021

Superhydrophobic surface on anodized AA5083 sample was obtained by an electrochemical process. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analyses revealed the hierarchical structure of the coating and the presence of manganese stearate. These features were crucial for the coating superhydrophobicity, demonstrated by a measured contact angle of ~ 163° and its self-cleaning ability. Electrochemical characterization in an aqueous solution mimicking seawater proved an enhanced corrosion resistance due to the superhydrophobic coating with respect to anodized AA5083 sample that also lasted after 20 immersion days in Cl- containing electrolyte.

Preparation and characterization of Pd2Sn nanoparticles

2007

We report a non-aqueous solution preparation of Pd{sub 2}Sn nanoparticles with sizes near 20 nm. The intermetallic compound with the Co{sub 2}Si structure has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Rietveld refinement of synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, and real-space pair distribution function analysis of high-energy synchrotron X-ray scattering. We also present a description of the electronic structure of this covalent intermetallic using density functional calculations of the electronic structure.

Spherical silica agglomerates possessing hierarchical porosity prepared by spray drying of MCM-41 and MCM-48 nanospheres

2003

Hierarchically ordered porous materials possessing both meso- and macropores can be obtained by agglomeration of spherical primary particles of mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-48 materials using the spray drying technique. A highly interconnected bimodal pore network is obtained due to the intra- and inter-particle pore systems within the micron-sized spherical agglomerates. Further packing of the agglomerates will result in a three-modal hierarchical pore system, where the first level of porosity originates from the ordered mesopores inside the primary particles, the second level is a result of the particle internal porosity, and the third level is due to the voids between the agglomerates. The …

Determining efficacy of monitoring devices on ceramic bond to resin composite

2012

Objectives: This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of 3D nanoroughness and 2D microroughness evaluations, by their correlation with contact angle measurements and shear bond strength test, in order to evaluate the effect of two different acids conditioning on the bonding efficacy of a leucite-based glass-ceramic to a composite resin. Study Design: Ceramic (IPS Empress) blocks were treated as follows: 1) no treatment, 2) 37% phosphoric acid (H3PO4), 15 s, 3) 9% hydrofluoric acid (HF), 5 min. Micro- and nano-roughness were assessed with a profilometer and by means of an atomic force microscopy (AFM). Water contact angle (CA) measurements were determined to assess wettability of the ceram…

Characterization of semicrystalline random copolymers by small-angle neutron scattering

1979

A new method is introduced to determine the degree of partitioning of noncrystallizable comonomer units (B units) between the two phases of a semicrystalline random copolymer. The method is based on the comparison of the intensities of small-angle neutron and x-ray scattering (SANS and SAXS, respectively). By this technique two quantities can be evaluated: the difference Δρ of the mass densities between the crystalline and the disordered regions, and the concentration fluctuations of the B units in the two phases. It is found that SANS is very sensitive to the presence of small amounts of B units if their scattering length is sufficiently different from that of the A units. This will be the…

Model of partial crystallization and melting derived from small-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopic studies on low-density polyethylene

1980

A temperature-dependent small-angle x-ray scattering and electron microscopic study on a sample of low-density polyethylene affords a determination of the structure changes in a heating and cooling cycle and suggests a new model of partial crystallization and melting. The analysis of SAXS data is based upon some general properties of the electron-density correlation function. Electron micrographs are obtained from stained sections γ irradiated at elevated temperatures and are analyzed quantitatively by statistical means. According to the model proposed here the thickness distribution in the amorphous layers, rather than that of the crystalline regions, is the essential factor governing the …

Structure of natural water-containing glasses from Lipari (Italy) and Eastern Rhodopes (Bulgaria): SAXS, WAXS and IR studies

1998

Abstract Two natural water-containing glasses with rhyolite composition originating from two different areas (perlite from Lipari, Italy, and expanded perlite from the Eastern Rhodopes, Bulgaria) have been characterised for chemical composition, atomic structure and specific surface area, with the ultimate goal of exploitation of volcanic glasses as carriers for heterogeneous metal catalysts. The two samples have similar chemical composition and total water content. The local structure, as determined by radial distribution function analysis of the wide angle X-ray scattering patterns, is similar, the medium-range structure being slightly more ordered for the Lipari glass. These results are …

Particle characterization using multiple scattering decorrelation methods: hard-sphere model system

2000

Applying static light scattering experiments, we characterize colloidal particles that are used as model hard-sphere systems in experiments investigating their crystallization kinetics. The particles comprise of a compact core of poly(methyl methacrylate) and short polymer hairs grafted onto the surface. We use a contrast variation procedure to determine the refractive index variation within the particles and observe that one component of the binary mixture used as a solvent penetrates the particles and masks completely the small polymer hairs. Making use of the determined refractive index variation, we obtain the average particle radius and its polydispersity from measurements of the parti…
