N,N-Di-n-octyl-N,N-dimethyl and N,N-di-n-nonyl-N,N-dimethyl ammonium cholates: 13C and 15N CPMAS NMR, powder X-ray diffraction and thermoanalytical c…
2009
Abstract N,N-Di-n-octyl-N,N-dimethyl cholate (1) and N,N-di-n-nonyl-N,N-dimethyl ammonium cholate (2) have been prepared by crystallization from equimolar mixtures of sodium cholate and quaternary N,N-di-n-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl (n-octyl or n-nonyl) ammonium bromides. The formed crystalline materials have been structurally characterized by 13C and 15N cross polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermoanalytical (TGA/DTA and DSC) methods and compared with each other. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns of 1 and 2 reveal clear similarities. Combined with the thermoanalytical data of these structures an existence of two hydrated polymorphs (most probably …
Treatment of Class III malocclusion using Hybrid Hyrax, Face Mask and Alt-RAMEC Protocol : a case report in a latin-american patient
2019
The management of Class III malocclusion is one of the greatest challenges of orthodontics. Current treatments offer the possibility of using direct skeletal anchorage to improve clinical outcomes. This case shows the results of using a Hyrax hybrid palatal anchorage, Alt-RAMEC (Alternate Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Contraction protocol) and a facemask to treat a maxillary hypoplasia Class III malocclusion in a Latin-American patient. The appliance design and the protocol used are widely described. Clinical and cephalometric results suggest that it is a good treatment option for this Latino patient, with moderate malocclusion and limitations in the dental anchorage. Key words:ALT-RAMEC, A…
Influence of tooth loss on mandibular morphology : a cone-beam computed tomography study
2019
Background Tooth loss adversely affects patients’ health and psychosocial wellbeing. In addition, it changes mandibular morphology. Objective: To evaluate the effect of tooth loss, age, and gender on mandibular morphology. Material and Methods Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans of 101 patients were examined to measure the gonial angle (GA), ramus height (RH) and condylar height (CH). Patients’ age, gender, and dental status were recorded. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the impact of gender, age, and tooth loss on the GA, RH and CH. The mean measurements of the GA, RH and CH were compared between dentate/edentulous patients after splitting by gende…
Measurements of total ozone amount over Badajoz (Southwestern Spain) by means of a GUV multiband radiometer
2012
This paper presents the first measurements of total ozone amount performed at the radiometric station of Badajoz (Spain) by means of a multichannel radiometer GUV-2511. The retrieval of total ozone amount from GUV measurements of solar ultraviolet irradiance is performed with the support of look-up tables calculated using the SBDART radiation transfer code. This methodology is based on the different absorption by ozone suffered by the radiation at two certain near wavelengths. In this case the pair 305, 340 nm was chosen because of its better performance than the pair 305, 320 nm. The look-up table contains the ratio between irradiances at the mentioned wavelengths calculated under differen…
Surface investigation of plasma HMDSO membranes post-treated by CF4/Ar plasma
2002
Fluorination treatment has been performed on polysiloxane membranes using a plasma glow discharge of a gases mixture CF4 and argon (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition). Atomic force microscopy, XPS analyses and contact angle measurements have been undertaken to explain the surface transformation and behavior, which strongly depend on the morphology, the composition and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of the plasma-polymerized initial membranes. Main result is that fluorination, which leads to hydrophobic membranes, has a more relevant effect on amorphous silica-like membranes than on polymer-like ones, according to their chemical composition whereas the plasma surface reaction …
Structural and electrochemical investigation on re-cast Nafion membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) application
2006
Abstract Starting from a 5 wt% ion power Nafion® solution and dissolving the dry residue in a suitable solvent (10 wt% solution in dimethylacetammide), re-cast Nafion films were developed for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) application. The used Doctor-Blade casting technique allowed to prepare scaled-up membranes comparable to the commercial Nafion ones with good mechanical resistance, thickness homogeneity and an excellent reproducibility. The differences between the re-cast membrane nanostructure and that of the commercial Nafion were investigated by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering. The obtained re-cast membrane shows at ambient conditions a semi-crystalline structure wit…
Non-Unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix at the European spallation source
2022
If neutrinos get mass through the exchange of lepton mediators, as in seesaw schemes, the neutrino appearance probabilities in oscillation experiments are modified due to effective nonunitarity of the lepton mixing matrix. This also leads to new CP phases and an ambiguity in underpinning the ''conventional'' phase of the three-neutrino paradigm. We study the CP sensitivities of various setups based at the European spallation source neutrino super-beam (ESSnuSB) experiment in the presence of nonunitarity. We also examine its potential in constraining the associated new physics parameters. Moreover, we show how the combination of DUNE and ESSnuSB can help further improve the sensitivities on …
Comparison of methods to estimate LAI from remote sensing in maize canopies by inversion of 1-D and 3-D models
2009
The inversion of canopy reflectance models is a procedure widely employed for the retrieval of LAI from remote sensing. However the accuracy of the estimates depends on a range of factors, most notably the realism of the canopy representation of the models employed and the a priori knowledge of some vegetation characteristics. The objective of the present work was to compare the performances and the operational limitations of the use of two contrasting type of radiative transfer models: a classical one-dimensional canopy reflectance model, PROSPECT+SAIL (PROSAIL) and a three-dimensional dynamic maize model (Lopez-Lozano et al., 2007) having greater realism in the description of the canopy s…
Age and gender correlation of gonial angle, ramus height and bigonial width in dentate subjects in a dental school in Far North Queensland
2016
Background: This study aimed to determine if mandibular parameters (gonial angle, bigonial width and ramus height) measured from panoramic radiographs, can be used to determine a correlation with an individual’s age and gender in dentate subjects in Far North Queensland. Material and Methods: The study utilised 2699 randomly selected panoramic radiographs of patients between the ages of 19-69 years, from which 220 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Each panoramic radiograph was analysed and the above three parameters recorded and measured. These values were collated into appropriate age and gender groups and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of the participants was 44.…
Halloysite nanotubes with fluorinated cavity: an innovative consolidant for paper treatment
2016
AbstractHybrid material based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and sodium perfluorooctanoate (NaPF8) was used as a consolidant for paper treatment. The consolidation efficiency was determined by thermogravimetry as well as by paper grammage determination. Morphological analysis of the treated paper was performed by means of scanning electron microscopy while the effect of modified HNTs on the thermal behaviour of the cellulose fibres was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry which determined the combustion enthalpy of the paper.Water contact angle measurements were performed to study the paper wettability. The physico-chemical properties investigated (mesoscopic structure, thermal…
