The origins of pre-existing and laser-induced ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical absorption in state-of-the-art glassy silicon dioxide and the ways to improve it are reviewed. The main causes of pre-existing absorption in UV/VUV are oxygen vacancies, hydroxyl (silanol) groups, and strained bonds/localized states due to glassy disorder. The main absorption bands induced by UV/VUV excimer lasers are due to oxygen vacancies and due to silicon and oxygen dangling bonds (E'-centers and non-bridging oxygen hole centers, respectively). Effects of recreational scuba diving on Mediterranean fishes: evidence of involuntary feeding?

Despite a large body of literature assessing the impacts of recreational scuba diving on marine habitats, little attention has been paid to the potentially harmful effects this has on fishes. The aim of this study was the assessment of the immediate response of different fish species to divers’ activities. A decrease of fishes’ natural diffidence towards divers is shown, probably due to an enhanced availability of their prey as a result of divers’ contacts with the substrate.
29Si Hyperfine structure of the E’_alfa center in amorphous silicon dioxide

We report a study by electron paramagnetic resonance on the E0 point defect in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2). Our experiments were performed on -ray irradiated oxygen-deficient materials and pointed out that the 29Si hyperfine structure of the E0 consists of a pair of lines split by 49 mT. On the basis of the experimental results, a microscopic model is proposed for the E0 center, consisting of a hole trapped in an oxygen vacancy with the unpaired electron sp3 orbital pointing away from the vacancy in a back-projected configuration and interacting with an extra oxygen atom of the a-SiO2 matrix.

We quantitatively studied the formation, diffusion, and reactions of mobile interstitial hydrogen atoms $({\mathrm{H}}^{0})$ and molecules $({\mathrm{H}}_{2})$ in ${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$-laser-irradiated silica $(\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2})$ glass between 10 and $330\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. Effects of temperature on electron paramagnetic resonance of dangling oxygen bonds in amorphous silicon dioxide

The properties of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal of oxygen dangling bonds in amorphous SiO2 ("non-bridging oxygen hole centers", NBOHC) in excimer laser-irradiated amorphous SiO2 were studied in the temperature range 20K to 295K. NBOHCs strongly affect optical and chemical properties of amorphous SiO2 -based (nano) structures and their surfaces. The behaviour of their EPR signal is complicated due to a nearly degenerate electronic ground state. It was found that EPR signal has a non-Curie (~1/T) T-dependence down to 40K, indicating that EPR-based concentration estimates routinely obtained at T = 77K underestimate the center concentrations at least by a factor of 1.7.
