Normal and transverse single tau polarization at the Z-peak
1994
Abstract We study normal (to the collision plane) and transverse (within the collision plane) single-τ polarization in τ pairs produced in e + e − unpolarized collisions at the Z -resonance. The transverse polarization component is sensitive to the anomalous weak-magnetic moment, whereas the normal polarization component is sensitive to a CP-violating weak-electric dipole moment. We show how these components of the single τ polarization are accessible from the angular distribution of its decay products. We define a CP violating asymmetry of the τ decay products which, with 10 7 Z ′s produced, provides a sensitivity of 2.3 × 10 −18 e ·cm for the weak-electric dipole moment.
Constraints on anomalous QGC's in $e^{+}e^{-}$ interactions from 183 to 209 GeV
2004
The acoplanar photon pairs produced in the reaction e+ e- --> nu nubar gamma gamma are analysed in the 700 inverse nanobarns of data collected by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 and 209 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model predictions is seen in any of the distributions examined. The resulting 95% C.L. limits set on the anomalous QGC's, az_0, az_c, aw_0 and aw_c, are -0.012 GeV**-2 < az_0/Lambda**2 < +0.019 GeV**-2, -0.041 GeV**-2 < az_c/Lambda**2 < +0.044 GeV**-2, -0.060 GeV**-2 < aw_0/Lambda**2 < +0.055 GeV**-2, -0.099 GeV**-2 < aw_c/Lambda**2 < +0.093 GeV**-2, where Lambda is the energy scale of the new Physics responsible for the anomalous couplings.
Measurement of triple gauge-boson couplings at 172 GeV
1998
The triple gauge-boson couplings, αWΦ, αW and αBΦ, have been measured using 34 semileptonically and 54 hadronically decaying W+W- candidate events. The events were selected in the data recorded during 1996 with the ALEPH detector at 172 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.65 pb-1. The triple gauge-boson couplings have been measured using optimal observables constructed from kinematic information of W+W- events. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.
Set of sum rules for anomalous gauge boson couplings
1999
The dependence of the differential cross-section for on-shell W-pair production on the anomalous trilinear gauge couplings invariant under C and P is examined. It is shown that the contributions of the anomalous magnetic moments of the W boson due to the photon and the Z can be individually projected out by means of two appropriately constructed polynomials. The remaining four anomalous couplings are shown to satisfy a set of model-independent sum rules. Specific models which predict special relations among the anomalous couplings are then studied; in particular, the composite model of Brodsky and Hiller, and the linear and non-linear effective Lagrangian approaches. The relations predicted…
Positron implantation profiles in layered samples
2009
The paper presents theoretical and experimental studies of the positron implantation profiles in layered samples. The Monte Carlo simulations performed using the GEANT4 toolkit reveal accumulation of positrons in the denser layer embedded between two less dense layers. That effect is significant not only for low energy positrons at slow monoenergetic positron beams but also for high energy positrons which are emitted from radioactive nuclei in conventional experiments. Measurements of the positron implantation profile into the samples which consist of silver and aluminium foils of different thickness show profile features which correspond well with those simulated by the GEANT4 toolkit for …
Measurement of the branching fraction for D0 → K-π+
1997
The branching fraction for D-0 --> K(-)pi(+) is measured with the statistics collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994. The method is based on the comparison between the rate for the reconstructed D*+ --> (D) pi(+), D-0 --> K(-)pi(+) decay chain and the rate for inclusive soft pion production at low transverse momentum with respect to the nearest jet. The result is B(D-0 --> K(-)pi(+)) = (3.90 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.12)% (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation at NNLO
2009
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable. In addition the NNLO results for the jet rates corresponding to the Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge jet algorithms are presented.
Factorization and resummation for jet broadening
2011
Jet broadening is an event-shape variable probing the transverse momenta of particles inside jets. It has been measured precisely in e+e- annihilations and is used to extract the strong coupling constant. The factorization of the associated cross section at small values of the broadening is afflicted by a collinear anomaly. Based on an analysis of this anomaly, we present the first all-order expressions for jet-broadening distributions, which are free of large perturbative logarithms in the two-jet limit. Our formulae reproduce known results at next-to-leading logarithmic order but also extend to higher orders.
The ASTERIX spectrometer at LEAR
1989
The ASTERIX spectrometer has been used to study the formation and the ground state of the pp atom and exclusive final states of pp annihilation at rest in a H2 gas target at NTP, using antiprotons from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. The article describes the mechanical construction of the apparatus, the trigger logic, the chamber readout, and the data acquisition system. The detector calibration and the offline processing of the 55 million reconstructed events are illustrated. An overview is given about the new physics results obtained by the experiment.
Measurement of time dependentCPasymmetry parameters inB0meson decays toωKS0,η′K0, andπ0KS0
2009
We present measurements of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters S and C in the decays B-0 -> omega K-S(0), B-0 -> eta'K-0, reconstructed as eta'K-S(0) and eta'K-L(0), and B-0 -> pi K-0(S)0. The data sample corresponds to the full BABAR dataset of 467 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs produced at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The results are S-omega KS0 = 0.55(-0.29)(+0.26) +/- 0.02, C-omega KS0 = 0.52(-0.20)(+0.22) +/- 0.03, S-eta'K0 = 0.57 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.02, C-eta'K0 = 0.08 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.02, S-pi 0KS0 = 0.55 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.03, and C-pi 0KS0 = 0.13 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.03, where the first errors are statistical and the second systemati…
