Dasein e Humanitas. La critica heideggeriana all'umanesimo tra Cura dell'esistenza e custodia dell'ente

2020

The critique of humanistic interpretations as a "person", as "being composed of spirit, soul and body", is aimed at claiming a level of discourse that “allows the event of the truth of being to happen” placing the 'humanitas on a higher level capable of restoring a new dignity to man. The invitation to overcome any anthropologism and subjectivism inaugurates a perspective for the contemporary world in which, by virtue of such decentralization, man is not master of other entities. Although many posthumanisms start from the critique of humanism, the very difference - albeit in the proximity - between the essence of action and that of the technique resolutely affirmed by Heidegger represents a…

Anthropocentrism versus Ecocentrism Revisited: Theoretical Confusions and Practical Conclusions

2013

One of the hardest questions in environmental philosophy is the debate between anthropocentric and ecocentric accounts of value. I argue that a great deal of the disagreement in this debate arises from a) misunderstanding of the concepts used in the debate and b) unfruitful reading of vaguely framed arguments. The conceptual and argumentative analysis of the debate shows that many arguments can be ignored as they either contain conceptual confusion or concern issues that are actually irrelevant to the centrism division. However, there are arguments that maintain their relevance, and these arguments have important consequences on the practical environmental ethics. Hence, contrary to Bryan G…

Dumb Animals: A Short History of Classical Logocentrism

2021

Among the most common and influential stereotypes of Greco-Roman literature is the idea that animals are ‘dumb’ (ἄλογα/muta), that is, mute and devoid of reason. In recent years, several explorations of what Stephen Newmyer has aptly called the ‘man alone of animals’ topos have pointed out that in asserting the privileged status of humans the ancients attached special importance to articulate language. Yet, most of these explorations have adopted a thematic rather than historical approach in an attempt to provide a comparative assessment of ancient and modern paradigms. In the present paper, I follow a historical line through the literary representations of animals as ‘dumb’, focusing on tw…

Klimata pārmaiņas Ričarda Pouersa romānā "The Overstory"

2022

Darbs pēta klimata pārmaiņu fenomenu Ričarda Pouersa romānā The Overstory, analizējot to no ekokritikas perspektīvas.

Pupil's ecological reasoning with help of modeling tool

2006

Ecological concepts, and in particular population dynamics, has been found to be among the most difficult topics in biology. Some researchers pointed to students' relatively weak mathematical background as the main source of learning difficulties. This paper reports on an investigation of pupil's (n=73) reasoning about the ecological phenomena by using an iconic modelling tool, WorldMaker. The simulations eliminated the need for understanding of mathematical equations, and made the ecological concepts much more accessible to some children. However, many of the pupils reasoned from an anthropocentric perspective that obstructed their ability to predict ecological phenomena which requires sys…

Religijny język ekologiczny encykliki Laudato si' papieża Franciszka

2017

Announced in 2005, the encyclical of Pope Francis: Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, is a dramatic appeal to change the attitude towards the environment and to take action to save it. The analysis was carried out from the viewpoint of ecolinguistics, and the criterion of the so-called environmental adequacy. At the center of attention was the problem of anthropocentrism, which for ecolinguists is the main “contamination ” of the language and the source of improper relations between man and nature. The encyclical is, however, a text functioning within Christianity, which is particularly blamed for the preservation of anthropocentric vision of the world within the culture. The analysis…

La Natura come soggetto di diritto: l'approccio ecuadoriano

2022

All legal systems by now must confront the issue of environmental protection. The scope of this paper is to analyse the Ecuadorian approach, considering that it is the only legal system which, so far, has constitutionalized the rights of Nature, thus allowing a change in the status of Nature, from object to subject of law, overcoming the traditional approach of Western environmental law. The paper also aims to show how the theme of the rights of Nature offers a valuable opportunity for intercultural dialogue, and how the Ecuadorian experience represents, in this sense, a perfect mix between Western legal notions, such as damage, protection, or representation, and the ancestral knowledge of …

Hermetic Roots of Marsilio Ficino’s Anthropocentric Thought

2013

Marsilio Ficino’s relationship to the Hermetic literary tradition has long been a controversial issue in academic discussion. Although Ficino is commonly known as a translator and keen reader of the philosophical Hermetica, his allegiances to the Hermetic ideas have been recognized only in his theory of magic (only to be denied later), while in other cases, in general, scholars tend to deny the impact of Hermetic writings instead of accepting it. This paper explores a topic in which the denial has been particularly harsh, namely Ficino’s Promethean philosophy of man, highlighted as the most influential achievement of his thought by previous generations (e.g. by Trinkaus). Despite the neglec…
