Modālo darbības vārdu un tiem pielīdzināmo vārdu un frāžu lietojums laikrakstā „Baltic Times”
2016
Visbiežāk izmantotās formas bija modālie darbības vārdi will un would. Kvalitatīvās analīzes rezultāti atklāj, ka visbiežāk sastopamās modālo un daļēji modālo darbības vārdu [semi-modals] …
An arthritogenic alphavirus uses the α1β1 integrin collagen receptor
2005
Ross River (RR) virus is an alphavirus endemic to Australia and New Guinea and is the aetiological agent of epidemic polyarthritis or RR virus disease. Here we provide evidence that RR virus uses the collagen-binding alpha1beta1 integrin as a cellular receptor. Infection could be inhibited by collagen IV and antibodies specific for the beta1 and alpha1 integrin proteins, and fibroblasts from alpha1-integrin-/- mice were less efficiently infected than wild-type fibroblasts. Soluble alpha1beta1 integrin bound immobilized RR virus, and peptides representing the alpha1beta1 integrin binding-site on collagen IV inhibited virus binding to cells. We speculate that two highly conserved regions with…
αβ defensin antimicrobial peptide (BPDEF) from the invasive red sea mussel Brachidontes pharaonis (P. Fischer, 1870)
2015
The immune system that plays a major role in determining host fitness in the wild, i.e. under the constraints imposed by ecology and life history. Permanent conflict interactions with the environment are the natural situation for a living creature. To partially resolve this, the immune system evolved and is characterized by an enormous variety of mechanisms and effectors, including the AMPs, although their specificity is poor. In fact, AMPs are universal and extremely successful in dealing with a huge range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses Amps are oligopeptides composed of varying number of amino acids with a broad spectrum of targeted organisms ranging from vi…
Profiling Dopamine-Induced Oxidized Proteoforms of β-synuclein by Top-Down Mass Spectrometry
2021
The formation of multiple proteoforms by post-translational modifications (PTMs) enables a single protein to acquire distinct functional roles in its biological context. Oxidation of methionine residues (Met) is a common PTM, involved in physiological (e.g., signaling) and pathological (e.g., oxidative stress) states. This PTM typically maps at multiple protein sites, generating a heterogeneous population of proteoforms with specific biophysical and biochemical properties. The identification and quantitation of the variety of oxidized proteoforms originated under a given condition is required to assess the exact molecular nature of the species responsible for the process under investigation…
Characterization and antimicrobial activity of the volatile components of the flowers of Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) DC. collected in Sicily and Alge…
2014
The essential oils of the flowers of Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) DC. (Apiaceae) collected in Sicily (MSi) and Algeria (MAl), respectively, were obtained by hydrodistillation, and their compositions were analysed. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 23 components in MSi and 60 compounds in MAl, respectively, showing a very different profile in the composition of the two populations. The main components of MSi were cembrene (28.2%), α-springene (17.5%) and β-springene (14.8%), also present in MAl but in lesser amount (0.4%, 1.8% and 0.9%, respectively), whereas the principal constituents of MAl were (E)-nerolidol (35.4%), α-costol (13.3%) and β-costol (6.8%). Both MS…

Desymmetrization of Prochiral Cyclobutanones via Nitrogen Insertion: A Concise Route to Chiral γ‐Lactams
2021
Abstract Asymmetric access to γ‐lactams is achieved via a cyclobutanone ring expansion using widely available (1S,2R)‐1‐amino‐2‐indanol for chiral induction. Mechanistic analysis of the key N,O‐ketal rearrangement reveals a Curtin–Hammett scenario, which enables a downstream stereoinduction (up to 88:12 dr) and is corroborated by spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational studies. In combination with an easy deprotection protocol, this operationally simple sequence allows the synthesis of a range of optically pure γ‐lactams, including those bearing all‐carbon quaternary stereocenters. In addition, the formal synthesis of drug molecules baclofen, brivaracetam, and pregabalin further …

Tracce di ‘improbus intestabilisque’ nella Parafrasi di Teofilo e nei Basilici
2017
The research is a part of a wider study on the improbitas and the so called intestabilitas in the Roman sources and focuses on analysis of a passage of the Theophilus’Paraphrase (2.10.6) and some σχόλια added to the Basilica [especially, Sch. 1 ad Bas. 39.1(Pb).6 e Sch. 3 ad Bas. 21.1(Pa).14] – texts that have not been taken into account (except for PT. 2.10.6 only) by the scholars who studied the implications associated with the improbus intestabilisque esse. The Author aims to verify the presence of traces of that institute in the aforementioned Byzantine sources, which may be useful for a more complete reconstruction of the historical evolution of the Roman formulaic improbus intestabili…
Appartenenza e alterità: sull’idea di cittadinanza nell’esperienza giuridica romana
2022
The paper discusses a plethora of ideas regarding the concept of Roman citizenship, which is addressed in the light of a theory of fellowship (meaning ‘to be part of a given community’) and a theory of otherness (meaning ‘a relationship with someone who is not part of a given community’). There will be a brief overview of the development of citizenship in Ancient Roman history (during the period of Kings, Republican and Imperial Rome). Several interpretations of well-known phrases, such as ‘civis Romanus sum’ or ‘adipisci civitatem ob virtutem’, are discussed and many phenomena are analyzed, such as the expulsion of the Latin population from Rome in the second century B.C. The purpose of th…
