Surface-induced ordering and disordering in face-centered-cubic alloys: A Monte Carlo study

1996

Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we have studied phase transitions in a fcc model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings $J$ in the presence of different free surfaces which lead either to surface-induced order or to surface-induced disorder. Our model is a prototype for CuAu-type ordering alloys and shows a strong first-order bulk transition at a temperature $\frac{k{T}_{\mathrm{cb}}}{|J|}=1.738005(50)$. For free (100) surfaces, we find a continuous surface transition at a temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{cs}}g{T}_{\mathrm{cb}}$ exhibiting critical exponents of the two-dimensional Ising model. Surface-induced ordering occurs as the temperature approaches ${T}_{\mathrm{cb}}$ and …

Ultrafast amplification and non-linear magneto-elastic coupling of coherent magnon modes in an antiferromagnet

2021

We investigate the role of domain walls in the ultrafast magnon dynamics of an antiferromagnetic NiO single crystal in a pump-probe experiment with variable pump photon energy. Analysing the amplitude of the energy-dependent photo-induced ultrafast spin dynamics, we detect a yet unreported coupling between the material's characteristic THz- and a GHz-magnon modes. We explain this unexpected coupling between two orthogonal eigenstates of the corresponding Hamiltonian by modelling the magneto-elastic interaction between spins in different domains. We find that such interaction, in the non-linear regime, couples the two different magnon modes via the domain walls and it can be optically exploi…

Terahertz electrical writing speed in an antiferromagnetic memory

2018

The speed of writing of state-of-the-art ferromagnetic memories is physically limited by an intrinsic gigahertz threshold. Recently, realization of memory devices based on antiferromagnets, in which spin directions periodically alternate from one atomic lattice site to the next has moved research in an alternative direction. We experimentally demonstrate at room temperature that the speed of reversible electrical writing in a memory device can be scaled up to terahertz using an antiferromagnet. A current-induced spin-torque mechanism is responsible for the switching in our memory devices throughout the 12-order-of-magnitude range of writing speeds from hertz to terahertz. Our work opens the…

Synthesis, crystal structure, thermal and magnetic properties of [Mn(H2O)6][Cu(pdta).2H2O (pdta= 1,3-propylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate

2000

[EN] On mixing concentrated aqueous solutions of pdta, Cu(II) and Mn(II) in the ratio 1:1:1 at pH 4.5, single crystals of the complex [Mn(H2O)6][Cu(pdta)]·2H2O (1) (pdta=1,3-propylenediamine-N,N,N'N'-tetraacetate) were obtained. X-ray structural analysis revealed that in the anion [Cu(pdta)]2- the coordination polyhedron around the Cu(II) ion can be described as a tetragonaly distorted CuN2O4 octahedron, whereas the cation [Mn(H2O)6]2+ can be described as a very regular MnO6 octahedron. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that at 110°C compound 1 loses its eight water molecules yielding the anhydrous compound [MnCu(pdta)] (2). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate …

2009

International audience; The photomagnetic properties of a series of [{Fe(NCS)(py-X)}2(bpypz)2] (NCS=thiocyanate, py=pyridine, X=4-Mepy, py, 3-Mepy, 3-Clpy and 3-Brpy, and bpypz=3,5-bis(pyridine-2-yl)pyazolate) binuclear complexes are close to the antiferromagnetic response of [{Fe(NCS)(3,5-dmpy)}3(bpypz)2] (3,5-dmpy=3,5-dimethylpyrazine), which is characterised by two iron(II) metal ions in a high-spin (HS) electronic configuration . This paper describes the photomagnetic properties of a series of binuclear iron(II) complexes belonging to the [{Fe(NCS)(py-X)}2(bpypz)2] family (NCS=thiocyanate; py=pyridine; bpypz=3,5-bis(pyridine-2-yl)pyrazolate; and py-X=4-Mepy (1), py (3), 3-Mepy (4), 3-Cl…

Structure, magnetic properties and nuclease activity of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazonecopper(II) complexes.

2008

New complexes of formulae [Cu(HL 2 )(H 2 O)(NO 3 )](NO 3 ) ( 1 ), [{Cu(L 1 )(tfa)} 2 ] ( 2 ), [{Cu(L 1 )} 2 (pz)](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 3 ) and {[{Cu(L 1 )} 2 (dca)](ClO 4 )} n ( 4 ), where HL 1  = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, HL 2  = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde 4 N -methylthiosemicarbazone, Htfa = trifluoroacetic acid (CF 3 COOH), pz = pyrazine (C 4 H 4 N 2 ) and dca = dicyanamide [N(CN) 2 ] − , have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of these compounds are built up of monomers ( 1 ), dinuclear entities with the metal centers bridged through the non-thiosemicarbazone coligand ( 2 and 3 ) and 1D chains of dimers ( 4 ). In all the cases, square–pyramidal copper(II) io…

Magnetic mixed-valence d2-d1-d1 trimers with partial electron delocalization: vibronic coupling and magnetic properties

1993

Abstract The energy levels and magnetic properties of a triangular mixed-valence cluster d1-d1-d2 with electron delocalization in a pair of sites are examined from a model that takes into account electron transfer, magnetic exchange, and vibronic coupling. We show that the electron transfer process involves besides the usual double-exchange parameter, and additional parameter referred to as exchange transfer. This last parameter accounts for the interaction between the moving electron of the mixed valence pair and the electron localized in the third side. We notice that the role of double exchange is to stabilize a ferromagnetic alignment of the spins on the mixed-valence pair. A comparison…

2008

Two new Co II /Co III complexes, [{Co II Co III (mea) 3 } 2 (bpe) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 4  · 1.5CH 3 OH · 1.5H 2 O ( 1 ) and [ Co 4 II Co 3 III ( dea ) 6 ( CH 3 COO ) 3 ] ( ClO 4 ) 0.75 ( CH 3 COO ) 1.25 · 0.5 H 2 O ( 2 ) [Hmea = monoethanolamine H 2 dea = diethanolamine and bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane], have been obtained by reacting cobalt(II) perchlorate ( 1 and 2 ), Hmea ( 1 )/H 2 dea ( 2 ), bpe ( 1 ) and sodium acetate ( 2 ). The crystal structures of 1 and 2 have been solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal 1 contains “Chinese lantern”-like shaped cations, resulting by connecting two {Co II Co III (mea) 3 } moieties with three flexible bpe ligands. The coordination sphere of the …
