Dianthus superbus as a critically endangered species in Latvia: evaluation of its growth conditions and conservation possibilities

Abstract Dianthus superbus is one of the most endangered species in Latvia and is on the verge of local extinction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to inventory previously identified populations of D. superbus in Latvia and to develop activities to conserve this species in accordance with the results obtained in situ. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan kirjallisuuden ja kuvataiteen välimaastoon sijoittuvaa taiteilijakirjailmiötä. Taidemuotona taiteilijakirjan katsotaan syntyneen 1960-luvulla. Termi (artists book) sai alkunsa 1973 Yhdysvalloissa taiteilijoiden tekemiä kirjoja esittelevän näyttelyn nimestä. Taiteilijakirjaan liittyviä, vielä vakiintumattomia käsitteitä avataan intertekstuaalisuuden keinoin. Comparison of sampling methods for semipelagic animals in two deep basins of Lake Saimaa

The efficiency of different methods for sampling semipelagic animals was compared in the deep basins of Lake Paasivesi and Lake Puruvesi of the complex Lake Saimaa, Finland, during 1990–92. Certain semipelagic animals, such as Mysis relicta, amphipods and larvae of Chaoborus flavicans, are important bioindicators of water and benthic quality. However, owing to their high mobility and vertical migrations they are difficult to sample quantitatively with traditional benthic methods.

It is well known that olfaction influences food intake, and conversely, that an individual’s nutritional status modulates olfactory sensitivity. However, what is still poorly understood is the neuronal correlate of this relationship, as well as the connections between the olfactory bulb and the hypothalamus. The goal of this report is to analyze the relationship between the olfactory bulb and hypothalamus, focusing on orexin A immunostaining, a hypothalamic neuropeptide that is thought to play a role in states of sleep/wakefulness. Modeling the decay of nitrite oxidizing bacteria under different reduction potential conditions

[EN] Autotrophic growth and decay rates of ammonium and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (AOB and NOB, respectively) have a significant impact on the design and on the process performance of wastewater treatment systems where nitrification occurs. Literature data on the separate decay rates of AOB and NOB is scarce and inconsistent. Inferring fish abundance in lakes from subfossil midge (Diptera:Chironomidae) remains

This study assessed the possibility of using subfossil remains of chironomid head capsules to reconstruct past fish abundances in lakes. Using data from 20 Swedish lakes, a weighted average (WA) model was created to predict the abundance of benthivorous fish (cyprinids and perch). Chironomid head capsules, identified to genus, served as the predictors to model already recorded (catch per unit effort) fish data.
