Social mechanisms and strategic action fields: The example of the emergence of the European Research Area
2017
The point of departure of this article is Fligstein and McAdam’s A Theory of Fields. It is argued that their theoretical framework would be strengthened by a more systematic focus in social mechanism-based explanations since this would increase understanding of how new strategic action fields (SAFs) emerge. This argument is illustrated by exploring the emergence of the European Research Area (ERA) as a SAF. In identifying social mechanisms the article draws both on Fligstein and McAdam’s studies and on academic capitalism literature. The main conclusion is that the emergence of the ERA was brought about by multiple social mechanisms such as collective attribution of threat/opportunity, soc…
Chemical composition of the essential oil from different vegetative parts of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. piperitum (Ucria) Coutinho (Umbelliferae) grow…
2021
In the present study, the chemical compositions of the essential oils from roots, stems, leaves and fruits of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. piperitum collected in Sicily were evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of the roots were terpinolene (33.15%), gamma-terpinene (12.18%) and fenchyl acetate (11.23%). Stems and leaves were very rich in alpha-phellandrene (36.85% and 41.59%, respectively) and beta-phellandrene (19.68% and 25.79%, respectively), whereas the main components of fruits were terpinolene (20.10%) and limonene (17.84%)These results were compared with those of the EOs of the same vegetative parts of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. vulgare, collected in the same station and in th…
Differentiation and ultrastructure of the spermatogonial cyst cells in the milkweed bug,Oncopeltus fasciatus
2002
Summary The testes of the newly hatched larva of Oncopeltus fasciatus consist of three different cell types enclosed by the tunica propria: the germline stem cells, the apical cells, and the follicle border cells which are the predecessors of the cyst progenitor cells. There are usually twelve somatically derived apical cells per follicle that no longer divide during postembryonic development. Their fine structural organization remains constant from hatching until death from old age. The apical complex cells are surrounded by at least four germline stem cells which all send cell projections toward the apical complex cells. A testicular follicle includes at least four border cells at the fir…
Corporate Venture Capital follow-on investments: the role of co-investors
2018
CVC investments allow corporates the option to internalize startups’ knowledge and technologies through follow-on investments. Since acquiring a backed startup is not always a guarantee of success, corporates should consider which are the most appropriate conditions under which it is beneficial to acquire the startup. Under the theoretical lens of Real Option theory, we examine the conditions under which a CVC investment may evolve into different kind of CVC follow-on investments. We suggest that the CVC characteristics that mitigate both endogenous and exogenous uncertainties positively affect the corporate’s decision to acquire a backed startup. In addition, we argue that the presence of …
Capillary electrophoresis–inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry hyphenation for the determination at the nanogram scale of metal affinities an…
2012
Abstract A screening strategy based on hyphenated capillary electrophoresis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE–ICP-MS) was developed to classify phosphorylated ligands according to their europium(III) binding affinity in a hydro-organic medium (sodium formate, pH 3.7, H2O/MeOH 90:10, v/v). Taking advantage of the high sensibility of ICP-MS for detecting phosphorus, this method enabled to assess the affinity of a variety of phosphorylated compounds, including phosphine oxides, thiophosphines, phosphonates, and phosphinates, in less than 1 h and using less than 5 ng of substance. By varying the total europium concentration, complexation constants could be determined accordin…
Asymmetric Single Point Incremental Forming of sheet metal
2005
The use of computers in manufacturing has enabled the development of several new sheet metal forming processes, which are based upon older technologies. This paper describes modifications that have been made to traditional forming methods such as conventional spinning and shear forming, forming processes in which deformation is localized. Recent advances have enabled this localized deformation to be accurately controlled and studied. Current developments have been focused on forming asymmetric parts using CNC technology, without the need for costly dies. Asymmetric Incremental Sheet Forming has the potential to revolutionize sheet metal forming, making it accessible to all levels of manufac…
