Rapid Self-Hypnosis: A New Self-Hypnosis Method and Its Comparison with the Hypnotic Induction Profile (HIP)

Despite its clinical importance, there are few systematic studies on the application of self-hypnosis. Rapid Self-Hypnosis (RSH) was created to provide a new procedure that is easy, comfortable, fosters alertness, and can be done covertly in everyday life. We present it as an alternative to the self-hypnosis version of the Hypnosis Induction Profile (HIP). Using a crossover design, we found in an experimental session that the RSH and the HIP produced comparable objective and subjective scores in the Barber Suggestibility Scale (BSS). Attitudes and beliefs toward hypnosis are relevant in promoting hypnotic responses, in predicting the efficacy of interventions that include hypnosis, and in reducing iatrogenic effects in hypnotized individuals. The goal of the present study is to test the impact of previous knowledge about hypnosis and past experiences being hypnotized on attitudes and beliefs about hypnosis. A double-blind, randomized, parallel study in 167 hospitalized patients with major depression and melancholia was conducted to determine if rapidly escalated doses of venlafaxine produced an earlier response, compared with rapidly escalated doses of imipramine. The daily dose of venlafaxine was rapidly increased to 375 mg/day over a five-day period, was maintained at this level for 10 days, and then was reduced to 150 mg/day for the remainder of the study. It has been demonstrated that the administration of interleukin-15 in rat models of colon carcinoma protects against chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal toxicities. The effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on force of contraction (FC), action potential (AP) and calcium current (ICa) were studied in human right atrial and left ventricular heart muscle. 5-HT exerted a concentration-dependent increase in FC in multicellular atrial preparations; the EC50 was approximately 3 x 10(-7) mol/l. Maximal increases in FC (252 +/- 58% of control values; mean +/- SEM, n = 6) were obtained at 5-HT 10(-5) mol/l. Objective To describe the progression of ocular changes in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis I receiving enzyme replacement therapy. Methods Three male and five female patients with mucopolysaccharidosis I were followed up for 4 years while undergoing enzyme replacement therapy with α-L-iduronidase (Aldurazyme). Visual acuity, corneal clouding, intraocular pressure, ophthalmoscopy, and optic disc measurements were performed yearly. Forty-two patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) were accepted into a multicenter prospective study in 1983 to 1990, treated with alfa-IFN 3 MU/m 2 3 times a week and then followed-up until August 1, 2003. All the patients who had disease progression with pulmonary spread were characterized by insufficient response to IFN-therapy and detection of HPV type 11.
